Why did clarks dad die?

Clark's dad, johnathan kent... dies. why? i thought he was alive during the regular super man movies? it was awful that he had to die.

nicoletriplett He died? I havent seen it in a while. I do remember however, seeing a superman movie where clarks dad dies. I just dont know which one it was. There is so many remakes.
