Tax write offs

Does anyone have a home based business? I understand there are lots of tax write offs if you have one (cell phone, internet, mileage, office supplies, etc.). How beneficial are tax write offs. At what rate are you reimbursed for the write offs (I'm sure it depends on what State you live in - I'm in NY). I also assume things are tax exempt when you purchase them, correct? I would love some info if anyone has some. Thanks!
