I'm facing that situation right now, and I can't get part time job because I'm currently doing unpaid volunteer work for my school major. So what I have decided to do is use the power of the internet to make some extra money online. So far I've made 33.50 from this one website.
My ultimate plan for making money online is to make about 100 blogs and 1 high profile website. I'm currently working on the site right now, but I can't say what its about or someone might steal my idea. I'm a one man team and that's a disadvantage since I have to learn all the necessary things to build my high profile site (PHP, Javascript, XHTML, Photoshop, mysql, etc.)
Anyways here is my blog and I've posted a picture of my first check that I've earned on the internet. I deposited it today and it really works!!!

How old are they? If under 18 I would suggest fast food restaurant, server at a restaurant that doesn't serve alchohol or sacker at a grocery store. When applying for a job be presentable. No baggie and sagging jeans. Where clothes that fit. Take piercings out. Hair cut and groomed neatly. This all makes a big difference on how fast and if you get a job.

There are lots of "side lines" available in every corner. Could be those online money making stuffs... or if its really a job experience.. they can go out and check out what store/establishment that caters to "working students". From there, from the available store/establishment that hires working students you can choose what you really like the most. If you're up to earning money... you should at least be passionate and you should like what you are doing. :)

i suggest that your friend should reflect and do some research first. what jobs are available for him, given his credentials? how much is the pay (or projected pay)? what does he want? what can he manage, given his situation? also, ask from various friends for advice--especially those with work or part-time job experiences. consult his parents.
survey, look and ask around. use the internet, but be cautious with what information to give, and be wary of scams.
good luck to your friend.
