HEY ALL,THIS IS A PHARMACIST!
I personally feel medicines shouldnt be taken for petite problems in body as body has it own recovery system and we should give time to our body.
For bigger disease or ailmets, medicines are a must, body needs them to perform certain functions.
From a pharmacist point of view, always notice one point, A pharmacist would never take medicines for himself since he is aware of the side effects!
Are you aware of the side effects of your medicines??? What medicines do you take??? Are they supposed to be taken for life or a short time????

Well about a couple of years back I was in the habit of taking medicines for very small problems. If I had cold I will go for a medicine, if have problem in throat I will take an antibiotic.Thsi way I found that my body became resistant to many medicines and were not effective any more.I found that my body has become resistant to these medicines, though I don't have any visible side effect on my body.Since then I have decreased my medicine intake and take the medicines only if I find that now it is a neccessity or for some major illness after consulting the doctor.

Many pharmacists take medicine..and making a blanket statement that a pharmacist would NEVER take medications seems to be irresponsible to me..no one should stop taking their prescription medications without consulting their doctor first.. this can be very dangerous..especially if they are blood thinners or cardiac medications..and what about the transplant patients? they have to take their medications for the rest of their lives in order to prevent rejection...I am sorry to be so blunt but I think that professional people should be careful about what they recommend to others without knowing their situations...it could cause someone to make a poor choice based on an opinion rather than a medical diagnosis. I agree that there are many medications on the market that seem oversold and over prescribed by the physicians...but the physician is still the one prescribing in the US and their advice should be followed or a second opinion sought. Diabetics have lifestyle changes that can possibly help reduce their need for medications but one would not want to put them in jeopardy by telling them to stop taking their medicines due to side effects... People can be heavily influenced by the title a person holds, so in my humble opinion that titled person should be cautious as to what information they put out into the public domain. And to answer your question about what medicines I take...I take thyroid supplement as I have extremely low thyroid that was affecting my heart rate ...I have my blood work done on a regular basis and have my medication changed accordingly. I also take a cardiac regulator as I have a condition that requires it..I have seen 3 specialists concerning it and all have agreed on the prescription..and since taking it my life has been much better and my heart rate is regulated.. I am aware of all of the side effects of my medications and closely follow the directions for consumption of them.

I take medicine for diabetes and for crohns disease. I don't like to take meds but I am to the point in my life that they are now a necessity. Guess that is one of the hazards of getting older.

I don't like taking medicines if I don't have to. My husband has hypothyroid disease and has been on synthroid since he was 12, and will be his whole life. I can see that, it helps his thyroid function.
Maybe I worked in too many nursing homes and assisted living homes, but seeing those people take 20 to 40 different medications a day seemed like all it was doing was prolonging a miserable life for some.
Personally, I don't want to live like that, it's no life at all.

first of all thank you very much for pointers you being a pharmacist you know better the good and bad part of medicine. when i was younger i used not to take medicine for slight pain in my body like dysmenorrhea, i just try to sleep and when i awake the dysmenorrhea is gone but now, when i become older and i do have lot of things to do and i don't want to be bother by pain, i always poopped up medicine like Alaxan for body pain, ponstan for tootache and migraine. i always thought that it might do harm to my health that is why i am looking for herbal medicines. If i could i will not take medicines.

yeah, medicines do have side effects, but if medicines is the only opiton available, better not skip that :)
I feel alternatevely you can do Yoga, exercise plus herbal meds and then slowly reduce your dependency from the strong meds. But Do consult a professional before you take any steps.

I seldom take medicine. If it is mild enough, I rather rely on water and rest to recuperate. It is only for the most drastic of cases that I resort to medicine.

When I was a teenager, I was very over-medicated for various conditions and a lot of the meds caused more problems than they fixed. After I turned 18 and I had a choice I got off a lot of those medications. Right now all I take is Zoloft for depression and birth control pills to regulate my hormone levels. I'll most likely be on both of those for life.
As for other medications, I rarely take them. Sometimes if I have a really bad headache, I'll take some ibuprofen, but only if I really think I need it. Sometime I'll take benedryl if my allergies are really bad, but I can only take that if I don't have to drive anywhere because it makes me sleepy.

I seldom take medicines because I'm always fine.Sometimes although I felt not so good I would do nothing and that would go away some time later. In my opinion all medicines have positive effects. When you take them for a long time you will depend on it and can not stop yourself go on taking.

ya ofcourse taking medicine and recovery power of the body both are slightly different things because all know that all have different immunity power and different recovery system that is not be predictable.this is known when we feel ill or the situation is out of controlled but the things is that why we do such kind of joke to our life although we are sufficient with all kinds of tool in present.why we take risk to our life...no body can wish to do this.then the question arise is that how far we have to take this oo upto which mark we have to follows this .for this e have to definatly concerned to our nearest or beleavable doctor.doctor should be a specilist one.the best things is that you should be so careful to their infection and yourself as a fit as possible.because prevention is better than cure.too many use of the medicine is very very harmful and dangerous to our life.the basic things is that prevention is better than cure.as far as we concerned about the side effects of the medicine that is not always working.taking our own decision and time for the better treatment but as soon as possible.use your own sense at the time when you suffered.taking of medicine is depends on the desease .it is supposed to be taken for the short span of time but not of course always because its affect your body immunity power .thanks

I take medicines that I will have to take for life, for Meniere's disease as well as for a lung condition that I have. In fact, likely I'll be stuck on more medicines soon, since tomorrow I'm going to do a test at the hospital. Bleh.
I don't like taking medicines so much, but there isn't much I can do about it. If I miss even a dose or two of the medicines I'm taking, I can tell the difference in my health. Yesterday at work I didn't get around to taking a dose of my vertigo medicine on time, and a coworker wound up having to go get it for me because I couldn't walk down the steps.
As for taking medicines for little things, I've always been encouraged to by my doctors, because little things turn into big things so quickly with my other problems. On top of everything else wrong with me, my immune system is crappy. Poor me wahhh wahhh wahh..
Sorry just realized this was starting to sound like a pity party. I'll go now. =p

I always take quick medications. I don't forget not take medicine everytime I have my period. It is the only way I can ease myself from dysmenorrhea. And also I've been used to medicines. In fact, I got plenty of them stored in the house. I have medicine for body ache, for head ache etc. I know they have side effects but I am at ease taking them. And I don't want to suffer from minor pains.

I don't take much, but I do take paracetemol regulalrly. I worry about what long term effects it might have on me. It seems like one doctor will say not to worry about it, and others say it builds up in your system and can be very bad for your liver over time. I don't know what to believe!
