Do you trust ATMs and debit cards?

Every two weeks like clockwork I go to the bank to cash my paycheque. I line up like cattle and use a teller. They always say why didn't you use the automated teller? You can deposit your cheque and withdraw money right away! Well fool me once, I'm not going to trust that again. I'm also a little paranoid using my back card at stores. I have heard such horror stories, besides that I don't like the fact that someone can monitor my spending and habits by the trail the bank card leaves behind. Maybe I am paranoid but it seems big brother is watching my every move. Do you trust your bank card?

whywiki you do have a point and I use to care alot about big brother watching my every move. To be honest I still don't. I try to pay cash when ever I can, or go to my banks ATM, but if I need it, I do and have used it and do alot more than I would like to. Who ever told you that you can deposit money into an ATM and have your money right away is wrong. It takes any where from 24 to 48 hours depending on your bank.

For me I always use debit cards as i have the ATM machine near my house. Basically i am lazy so, i always use electronic cards that the bank issued to me. till today i haven't faced any problem regarding my account but many people say they don't feel safe to use cards.

I'm waiting for the time when there is a little slot at the side of your computer so when you want the money, it comes right out.

Whywiki ,I think you may as well get used to useing the ATM's and Bankcards .I believe in the not to distant future there will be no paper money .Every transaction you make will be electronic .You are correct in thinking that Big Brother is watching but that's what makes it so easy for banks and other institutions to get you to use the cards .They just track and transfer everything by computer .Easy to keep records and don't need employees to do the work .Saves them lots of time and money .

I hate the fact that banks charge so much and do so little. I just hate banks. I guess in 20 years we will all be so used to it the idea of cash will seem strange.

I looove my bank card. I never go to the bank unless I absolutely have to. I have direct deposit from work, and I pay everything with my card, and rarely ever have more than 5.00 in cash on me, and usually not that much unless I take some out for a special reason. Things can happen, and I've had to monitor my statements to be sure there aren't any strange charges on there. I've had to dispute things where people have somehow got hold of my number and taken out charges I didn't authorize, probably from something I did online..but the bank will put the money back in your account once you dispute it and after they investigate, they will let you know, and as long as you didn't authorize the charge, you get to keep the money. Big Brother can watch me all they like.. I have nothing to hide. :O)

my wife and i have been using direct deposit..we have our retirement checks sent direct to the bank as the post office will deliver them but some people have been known to stock the senior citizens and steal the checks out of their mail box or worse..rob them..so we go to the atm for $300 a week withdrawl..there is a $300 dollar limit per day...so far its been two years and we have had no problems... i should wonder why the bank would tell you to go to a ATM machine? it would seem they are working themselves out of a job because even in the supermarket and some stores there is automatic checkout lanes and the trend it getting now that there is no limit to the items you can check out yourself..the time is coming when machines like the ATM machines will replace most tellers and cashiers...and money will not exist but be in the form of plastic money...even the casinos are changing away from coins..to tokens to just slips of paper..what is the fun of hitting a jackpot and hearing the coins come clinking out? well i stopped going to casinos anyway...this is money just lost..but I do play the lottery..as I still have a silly dream..and whats a buck "?

Well I hate ATM's because usually you have to pay a fee just to get your own money. I don't trust debit cards, because I have a friend who someone had the account numbers for her debit card. The person was using it in the same places that she would also likely use it. So she didn't realize at first that someone was using it and the money was comming out of her checking account. She finally figured it out when she saw her bank statement and it said she filled her gas tank at the same gas station the two days in a row. She never drove enough to even use a tank of gas up in a week let alone a day. She couldn't prove anything so she lost all that money. At least with credit cards you are protected if something like that happens.

I do, but only because the bank ahs a garantee that even if someone skimms your card and so on, they will replace you so yo will not loose anything. I hardly ever use cash, i am in much more control with a debit or creditcard.. Once again i learn how different people are =)

if you are paranoid about someone watching what you purchase, why don't you feel the same about typing here? there is no privacy anymore it makes us safer, yet we lose privacy personally I think a little less government monitoring would be better maybe the Gov will do some genealogy for me, Having Barons and KNights in my heritage, etc.

i trust and love my debit card and do all I can online and rarely need to go to my bank except to deposit. I buy online and I use paypal and have them credit my bank account when I make payoff. I trust them explicitly.

Well, I hate carrying Cash, but I do go to the Bank and see a Teller at least 2 times a month, as our Bank gives Free Cashier Checks since I have an Account there, so since this is Cheaper than having Checks, we do it this way. For us it is no Big deal to do this. As for using a Debit Card, I have one, and I do deposit a lot of my Checks, etc. this way. I have an Online Business, etc. that pays me via Checks besides the Check I get from my Employer, so most of the time I deposit these via my Bank Card first. Yes, there can be Issues with using your Bank Card since it has a Master Card or Visa logo on it using it a lot of places, but for me, the only time that I think I have had issues was with a place online I canceled from, and they kept on taking money out anyway months later. Otherwise I feel safe using my Card, so I will continue to do so. Because most of the things you do online anymore, you need a Debit or Credit Card, so I have to own one.

Yes scenario you are talking about is scary and not uncommon but I think I use my card and atm just because its convenient and we move around a lot so its good to have an accouint at one place and withdraw anywhere in the country. It saves us hassel of opening accoutn again and again all ove rthe country which we did when cards had not become so common.

Well, we really have to be careful in this matter. We should always think twice before making a decision. So far, I am not a victim of this that's why I amy very careful.

atm cards are very much essential to avoid the long que that exist in banks to withdraw our own money.the atm card is used for 24 hour banking, life is risky the need of money may arise any time hence according to me atm card is must.
