Thankful My Mother is Alive

I have lived in the Blacksburg, Virginia area my whole life. My mom has worked at Virginia Tech since she was 17 so when I woke up to my grandmother telling me that fleets of ambulances were being sent onto campus from neighboring counties, I was horrified. My mother works in Burruss Hall which is right next door to Norris Hall. She spent the entire day yesterday huddled up underneath a desk in her office along with her co-workers. I was so mad to hear that the first shooting was at 7:15 in the morning and that Virginia Tech allowed all the students and staff to roam around on campus without being notified that there had been two murders on campus until after another 30 people had been massacred. It's sick. The media is all over the place here trying to question me and my boyfriend while we are working at a pizza place, harassing gas station attendants trying to find out where to go to get their story. I just want this to end. For once, I miss living in a small town. Two shootings in one year in such a small area is ridiculous. Anyway, my mother got off campus at 4 yesterday, 2 hours after they were told that they had to leave. She is fine and so is everyone in her office and her building.

I'm so sorry to hear about your mom... I didn't understand it either, why when the first shooting happened they should have warned people and got them the hell outta there. There was something on the news lastnight about the gunman writing weird enough stories a few years back to get police attention. Obviously he needed some help and no one did anything and now all this has happened. It's sad that something this tragic has to be what opens people's eyes to things! I'm glad to hear that you and your mom are surviving okay though. you are in my thoughts and prayers!

My room mate has a sister who lives only a block from the campus and she usually jogs through the campus grounds every morning. You can imagine the calls flying between him and his family members assuring everyone that she was not there also.

Reportedly the shooter had a history of mental illness. I really sympathize for people with mental illness. Unfortunately this particular guy wasn't properly treated.

I'm glad your mother is okay but I think you are being a bit childish and petty to be angry at the University. Given what they knew after the first shooting, they had no reason to think that this guy would go into a school building and massacre 30 more people. However, an email about the first shooting could have created panic. And, you are foolish to expect that area to be any more free from crime and shootings than any other part of the country. If you think you can move anywhere in this world and escape violence, you are naive. As far as the media is concerned, I know it's annoying but they are trying to do their job and getting upset over it is a waste of your time and energy. You need to just be thankful that your mother is alright and deal with the situation.

I am so glad to hear that your mother is alive. Its a sad, sick even that took place for no reason at all. I still don't get it. If someone is so unhappy with their life, then just take you own. Why bring innocent people down with you? It makes you really wonder what thoughts go through peoples heads. Hopefully your mom won't experience any nightmares or things like that. Be there for her and be strong. God Bless You and your family!!

I'm so glad that your mom is ok. What a scary thought knowing that she was on campus when this went down. This has to hit home really hard for her. I've been praying for all those involved in this. Not only for the families who lost loved ones but anyone who has had to deal with this.

I'm so glad that your mother is alive, and well, along with everyone else in her building. I live near Radford University, and I'm absolutely terrified that something like this is going to happen again..It's horrifying that something happened so close to us, it never crossed my mind for a second. My heart goes out to the families who lost their loved ones..

I've watched the file video of what had happened and I'm thankful that your mom's safe. I don't exactly know what happened but I'm hoping that everything will be back to normal -though i know that it won't be that easy and soon, but we're all praying for everyone's recovery, both physically, psychologically and spiritually...God Bless!
