I am myself probably a bit of a thing of the past so I may not be the best person to answer this. I have my hair in one at them moment, so for me, no they are not a thing of the past.

My niece wears a ponytail all the time. but then she plays soccer a lot and so the ponytail is necessary for play and practice, and an easy way to do something with the hair at other times. When she's going out, though, she will spend a lot of time on her hair, though it's basically straight and not in any weave or any style. Guess it depends on how much time/money a person has to spend on one's hair.

Acturally, I see alot of pony tails in our community on both male and female. Maybe it dependson the community that you live in. I wear my hair short these days but just a few years ago it was down to my hips and I wore it braded as it stayed in place better. My cousin, on the other hand has hair to her hips and he wears it loose or in a ponytail.

I have my hair in a ponytail most days as it is so much easier to have it off my face and out of the way. As I have had mostly sort hair for the past five years it has taken some getting use to having it long again (just above my bra at the back).
A few months ago one of my best friends straightened my hair for me for the first time and since then I tend to not go out with it down now unless it has been straightened first as it looks so much better straight (and slightly longer) now I just have to get myself some straighteners.

I wear a ponytail at least 4 days a week, but I'm not exactly fashionable. :-) I wear them at work to keep the hair out of my face (and the tools, and the paint...). I don't bother spending much time on my hair in the mornings, because I work with a bunch of carpenters, who really don't care what my hair looks like!

I don't really see pony tails where I live either, outside of girls playing sports. But, I've read in the magazines that a pony tail, done right, could look very sleek and sophisticated. For me, though, I only throw my hair in a pony tail when my hair is giving me problems being down and I don't have any time to do anything else with it. It's the easiest and fastest way to manage it and hide the craziness.

I see ponytails a lot in my community. There are countless ponytails among my teen daughter's high school friends, however I also see many on the college campus at which I teach. Now I don't see many ponytails on the professors, as most have shorter hairstyles.

I almost all of the time wear my hair up in a ponytail but it is tucked halfway under the hairband so itnstead of the ponytail hanging down it is tucked under the band.I hardly ever fix my hair anymore.I guess since I had kids I hardly can find the time.I usually fix my hair for weddings,or once in a blue moon ect.I wish I could fix it more but havent the time yet.I see people wearing ponytails aroud where I live though. My sister wears hers in ponytail sometimes. It can look nice wearing it in a ponytail as well.

i really only do that if i'm working or cleaning-
i have hip length hair and if i don't tie it back on those occasions,it gets in the way of what i'm doing.
but as a hairstyle,no,i usually don't do that.

If you saw me, I'd probably have my hair down. And if it was up, it would be in a low, loose ponytail or a messy bun. I'm pretty boring and not all that daring when it comes to hair styles. Well, my friends and I do try crazy hairstyles, but that's not exactly to go out with. For example we've done the Star Wars hair and really insane things. ;)
My hair is absolutely horrible, though. It's thin and stringy, and gets greasy even though I wash it everyday really well. I can hardly do anything with it because since it's so thin all the hair seperates from one big, pretty hair to a bunch of messy strands. *sighs* I wish I could do a lot more with my hair. But I'm still boring, I still wear plain old low ponytails and messy buns.
