How secure are US schools?

it's a distrubing fact that US schools are not secured enough that gunmen are able to do senseless killings similar to the Virginia Tech shootings. how secure are they? This kind of incident has been repeated over and over and still, authorities and even school administrative bodies have been lax in beefing up their security for the safety of the students.
what i've noticed is the fact that majority of the schools in the US are open, no gates, no high walls to keep outsiders and even those who intend to do harm from enetring the school premises, like the ones we have here. here, we have such a tight security on campuses, the chances of your getting anything close to being called a deadly weapon as small as a compact cutter will be questioned and confiscated upon entry.
the reality is that anyone can easily get a fire arm in the US and i believe this is a huge problem and should be the main concern of US authorities to address the other issues related to gun control problems.
what are your thoughts on this issue? floor is open.

Oh I agree that the schools here are not secure, at least the ones they are building here in Florida. They have open air hallways, they don't even have on solid building but off shoots with the hallways all open with no roof. There is barely any fence, a chain link that anyone could jump over. People can walk in at any spot on the property and into the school without being noticed. It is scary. I worry because both my neices are in school and I know they are vulnerable there but there isn't much choice in sending them either. It's something we have to live with. I wish they were built more like schools up in the North where they are one solid building and you have doors on the entrances. It would be better then what we have.
