& for 'and' is OK, LOL! Now I have to reveal a secret and give a small Estonian lesson. I fell in love with the abbreviation LOL, it was the love of the first sight. It always makes me really laugh when I see it. The fact is that 'loll' (with two 'l's at the end and pronounced with palatalization), means 'dumb' in Estonian.

I usually try to use the whole word, instead of using abbreviations. But I don't know why I like to use "coz" instead of "cause", I think it looks nice to use "coz". :p
As for symbols, I think I use the "&" quite often. And I like to use smiley face in informal conversation, especially :p and ^_^.

I do catch myself using abbreviations a WHOLE lot especially when I am text messaging (because its easier) and when I am using instant messengers. I say things like tmrw (tomorrow), u (you), US(united states), etc. Its just convienent because its a pain to write those long words out!

I use abbreviations all the time. I was a debater in high school and we all had our own systems. I use w/e = weekend. w/i = without w/in = within o/c = of course and all kinds of other things. When I was still in college, I usually invented my own shorthand as well. I remember for one US history course I took, I used a double "S" for slavery, a double "C" for congress, and all sorts of abbreviations for countries. France = FR, Germany = GY, etc. Also, K underlined is key, O/l is outline, T/ is turn. Now that I'm thinking about it, I've got tons of weird little short cuts.

Sometimes I use abbreviated words and symbols depending on who is the end user but most of the times I type the whole word because the end user might not got exactly the message or information that I want to convey. For more, they might not understand the abbreviated words and I think its inproper to abbreviate words that has no abbreviation at all.
