History is doomed to repeat itself! (Va. Tech shooting)

I can remember when I was a sophomore in high school there was this quote up on my history teachers wall. It said, "Those who fail to study history are doomed to repeat it. I always wondered why someone would think that history would repeat itself. I guess I always believed that our politicians and other government leaders had learned to learn from history so that we would not repeat things that happened in the past.
As I have grown older and I have learned more about the world around me. I have come to the realization that our country is repeating history once again. Maybe not our history but of events that have happened in the past to other countries. Maybe it is our fault that we do not learn about the history of the world as a whole and not just our own.
You see Gun Control is a huge issue in this country and has always been an issue for as long as there have been guns and it will remain an issue throughout time. The fact remains that in 1935 Adolf Hitler addressed Germany and said, "1935 will go down in history! For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration! Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future!"
How is this quote relevant to us today one might ask? Well, the answer is simple in the past couple of days mass media has been covering the Va. Tech massacre. All of them asking the question of whether tougher gun control laws would have protected those students and other students who have been gunned down in school shootings. The answer that is so often said by politicians is "yes." And that is the problem no one wants to study the past and see what has happened to those who have had to give up their weapons to the government. There was a teacher who had survived the Holocaust but did not survive the shooting. I bet that if you asked him as to what he thought about gun control you would hear of him speak about how the Jews could not fight against the Nazi's because they had no weapons among them.
You see if we take away guns from the people of this country we will have no way to protect ourselves and while law abiding citizens may obey the law. Criminals who are already using guns unlawfully will be the only people who have guns other than government authorities. This will not make our streets safer it will only endanger us more. Because democrats are socialists at heart and they want government to be involved in every aspect of our lives and while it is for the good of the people they think they are doing this for it won't be good for anyone.
If people fail to speak up now then we will be facing another Holocaust or some other horrible incident which won't even make the headlines because the government will have control of everything and will be able to put a gun to news anchors heads and say if you want to see your family and live then you won't tell the American public that the government was responsible for a shooting of its own people for no reason at all.

You've made a lot of good points. The sorry truth is that for some reason or another, the people we've voted into office get this 'know it all' feeling and disregard that valuable knowledge.
I think it's good that someone finally went public with the bulk cell text idea to warn people about these kinds of situations. Hopefully there are more safeguards in place to keep this from happening again, or at least to keep something like this from happening on the same scale again.
