All I really use these days is Skype. I used it years ago, when it was one of few programs that could call a telephone (back then, they were all free).
I didn't really get in to IM until I first got my own Internet connection. I started out with Windows Messenger, and was perfectly happy with it. But almost none of my friends know how to touch-type, so they were more interested in VoIP.
A couple of my friends started using MSN Messenger, which later became Windows Live Messenger, and turned me on to it. It was cool, but it kept failing to connect to the server. I'm a tech, and don't want anything unstable on my machine, so I got rid of it and went back to Windows Messenger.
Another of my friends was using Yahoo! Messenger, and turned us all on to it. It was a lot of fun; we'd keep sending each other those animated emoticons, and enjoying a good laugh over it. But Yahoo! Messenger kept crashing on my machine, and I promptly did away with it.
Then I relocated Skype. It had a sound quality that blew all the others out of the water. It never crashed, and only rarely did it drop a call. And when it did, it usually had something to do with one friend's machine that had Verizon (wireless dial-up). I turned everyone on to Skype, and we started goofing off together with its conference-call capabilities.
Things got even better when I found a package online that lets you turn Skype into Portable Skype. I have a 2 GB flashdrive that holds almost 75 applications, all accessible from PStart, my autostart menu-launcher. I transferred my profile with the greatest of ease, and went portable.
Then I found AIM. It gave me a free number, complete with voicemail, that could be called from a telephone. Coupled with AdCalls, which allows free outgoing phone calls, I was once again able to achieve full-duplex PC telephony. Not many people need to phone me though, and my AIM phoneline account has expired. I just use Skype these days. How about you?

I prefer Yahoo messenger. Although it's in the 2nd ranked I-chat category. I am comfortable using YM since my "countrymen" are more like to use it.
