What degree would be best....?

I've finally decided once and for all that I'm going to go to school to continue my education and start my career as a writer. I'm not entirely sure if I want to write novels or write for a magazine. If I go the magazine route, I'm going to shoot for a food magazine, such as Gourmet or Food And Wine. I know if I do that option, I'm going to have to go back and finish my culinary arts education. Now my question is, if I were to choose writing novels, what do you think the best choice would be for me to get a degree in? I know I can go for just an English degree, but maybe some of you know something better, which would help me more in the long run. So let's hear it!

Well, you can try majoring in the humanities or journalism. Or even better, consider majoring in a subject that you hope to become an expert in. You will be able to write articles, books and stories, as well as consult in your area of expertise. Look at the overall picture and what you really want to do with your life. What are you good at? What do you enjoy helping people with? Use your answers to choose your major.

I just made that decision too! I went from Financial Accounting to English - Writing. I narrowed my choices to English - Writing and English - Literature, both were offered at my school. I'm also torn when it comes to writing novels or writing for magazines. However, I'm not particulary interested in writing for food magazines, I'd be more for travel magazines. I'd say that you should look at the majors you are interested in under the writing category and compare the classes that you would have to take. Which interest you more? Which do you think would help you the most. That's what I did. The classes required for receiving a Bachelor's degree in English - Writing really sparked my interest. In fact I have an appointment with my counselor today, who just helped me switch majors, and she is going to help me set up my Fall Semester. I'm looking forward to it because the classes that I need to take sound like awesome classes! Good luck with your decision!

I'd recommend a degree in English and/or Creative writing with a minor in something like sociology, history, communications, media, journalism, French, cultural studies or the like. Why? Because writers need to know more than grammar and sentence structure, they need to know people and the different currents that run through their lives. Also, as an English major, it will make you more marketable if you have a minor or experience in other disciplines. Good luck on your studies.

I think it would be great if you go with the magazine route first. That way, you can enhance your skills in writing and will surely teach you to grow more matured when it comes to writing. Who knows, the lesson you've learned from it will lead to a popular novel someday. Anything can be possible! Wish you the best with your future career. :) - Ron Reyes www.ronreyes.co.nr
