Elderly friends of mine tell stories of how years ago their familys would keep an animal for a year rearing it. It almost becoming a family pet a pig or sheep or such like. When the time came the animal would be slaughtered for meat. The stories horrify me although I feel a hypocrite because Im the first to dig into the sunday roast. Do you think we would eat less meat and appreciate it more if our habits where like those days, rather than wandering into the super market and selecting our meat from an attractive freezer counter?

I definitely think we would eat less meat if we had to revert back to those times you are talking about. I for one, couldn't slaughter an animal that I had raised, so me and my family could eat it. No way. Today it's so easy for us to select a piece of meat which is neatly packaged up for us. So yes, I think we would all eat less meat if we had to rear and slaughter the animal ourselves.
