A masterpiece of Irish drama of the first decade of the 20th Century, this play depicts rural environment. The Acts generate good laughter and is readable even in this 21st Century. The protagonist Christy is very much down-to-earth. But there is always a doubt whether it is a tragedy, because the expected end result of hero marrying the heroine does not materialise. Or we may call it a tragi-comedy.
