Whether you love them or hate them, which are the stories that you think are the most important? The stories that have either changed the direction of comics, or how people perceive them? I don't have a comprehensive list, but I'd definitely say Watchmen, the Sandman, Squadron Supreme (though it seems to have been forgotten), Bone, The Dark Knight Returns - I'm sure there are many others, so I'd love to hear what you all think!

definitely watchmen , the sandman , and the dark knight, also akira ( i think it had a big influence on western comics even if it was japanese.) for more main stream, i'd have to say crisis on infinite earths, fall of the mutants, kingdom come, and identity crisis. for me, all landmarks in comic history.

Oooh, good call on Akira! I loved the movie, but the book is even better, albeit extremely complex. I haven't read Crisis on Infinite Earths, but that's because I've only recently started reading anything even remotely cape and tights.
