My husband and I are mixed on our sons new ability. We don't want him to suck his thumb when he gets older, this is one of the reasons we didn't give him a binky. Also, it could mess up his future teeth. But, it is a good self-soothing technique for now.

I'm torn over this issue too. My son never wanted a pacifier. He started sucking his thumb at 4 or 5 months and never stopped. He just turned 2. From the looks of it, he's going to be doing it for awhile. I'm also worried he's going to mess up his teeth. Right now, it's a good self-soothing technique and because of this, he's such a well-behaved child. I don't know how to make him stop without negative consequences. I think I'm just going to continue to let him do it until he's ready to let go.
