You need to find something that you have a reasonable knowledge about, something that you enjoy and expand on that. At the same time you must be prepared to listen to what others have to write about the topic ... they might not agree with you but they are entitled to have their say ... and as long as it is not abusive it is okay to disagree.
I have responded to some discussions when I have not agreed with the person posting the discussion ... but said my piece and received comment back ... went back and forwards a bit and it was enjoyable. I have only started a few discussions so far ... but that is partly because it takes a long time to type one out. When I reach the 500 rating mark .. then I can do a cut and paste so that will change a little bit. A friend told me that it is better to start one good discussion that a dozen iffy ones. That person has received a large number of responses to a couple of her discussions ... she is one of the top users .. so I am taking her advice on this. It does seem that she knows what she is doing is she can get over 100 responses for at least 10% of her discussions .. and maybe up to 50 responses for another 50% of them.
I see lots of discussions here that have maybe 1, or just 2-5 responses.

Finding a topic that you are passionate about and then others will follow. You have to open yourself up to ideas and then the dicussions will flow
