do you have a home alarm system?

The home we have just purchased has a home alarm system which is something new to mean. My present apartment just has the lick and a deadbolt . This system is set up for direct access to the police station, fire department and since I have health problems a quick link to 911 that lets them know the conditions that exist in the home. Which is a neat feature. The alarm service cost 29.99 a month when you sign up for a contract of 72 months which I thought was pretty reasonable. Of course there are all the stickers everywhere saying that the home is protected by this alarm. I'm wondering how many of you have an alarm system or think it's a waste of money. And I was shocked to know my home owners insurance gave me a lousy break of 60 dollars a year for have a security system, i thought it would be more than that.

i am beginning to see that dogs are the best alarm systems going and all you need to pay is food and TLC.

I don think that having an alarm system is a waist of money. Anything that will ensure you and your families safety is not a waist. It also sounds as if there are many benifits to this alarm system as well, being linked to all the major emergency stations. I would love an alarm system on this house...even if it was never used..at least you have the piece of mind that help is not far in the case of an emergency!

Thanks so much for bringing that up too safety for my family is very important too. When someone breaks into you home and wants your belongings who is to say they won't hurt you to get it? It does give you that extra feeling of security I just need to know if the cost is worth the security and after your comment which was one issue i don't think of .Which i can't believe, it sure seems worth it now thanks so much

We don't have a security system at our house. But we live in base housing, which gives us a little bit of added protection. You have to have an ID or get someone with an ID to sign you on base. Anytime kids break into houses on our base, they are caught, and the consequences are pretty severe.
We also have two dogs that sometimes even bark when the neighbors go in or out at night because they are so protective.

Oh i can see how you feel much safer being on a base.I know I had a friend who lived on a base and visiting him was an adventure security was tight. It is also good to hear when kids do get into to trouble it is handled seriously . that makes all the difference. Once again the dogs have security all wrapped up at your place too

i don't know what's a home alarm system.. haha.. i never see one before.. to be honest with you .. i don't even know how effective is it.. but i do saw them in movies.. in companies.. and so on... they seem very sophisticated.. in japan.. i think.. there's a home alarm system.. where you break the window of a house.. and within 5 minute. police will be waiting for you outside the house.. haha.. waiting to say "hello sir, what are you doing?" .. so.. it's quite safe with such system.. but.. what happens when you lose your keys.. haha.. you just have to waste the police time..wastage of time and resources.. erm.. good luck with your new alarm system okay? :)

well thank you but of course you would have extra sets of keys thats a must but the idea of a home alarm system is when you home or out of your home to keep thieves from breaking in and stealing all your stuff lol. That would not be a good thing Lil thanks for commenting

We have calling bell inside house and any family member, stranger or guest coming to home he/she push switch of calling bell and it ring then we watch the person through door viewer then open the door. This is system in our country, we do not need buglar alarm system.

Yes, I have two dogs! Actually I don't really know how good they would be. Both are extremely friendly, but they do bark a lot, & are very likely to bark at anyone trying to get into a yard. I guess they would serve as a warning.
I have triple locks on my front security door.
All my windows have that anti-smash film on them.
All my windows have locks.
If anyone tried to jump over the fence between the front & the back, they would get caugfht in a branbled mess of sharp twigs, and then have the bigger dog on the other side barking at them.
I have never used an alarm system, they are quite expensive. It is also a bit of a nuisance when a neighbours alarm goes off because their dog got in the way!

That was my one concern would I be setting the darn thing off myself all the time and if it would be a pain in my butt. I am home most of the time would it be a waste of money. The insurance company not really rebating us much kind of made me think if it really worked to deter crime. or even if our city has enough of a crime rate to warrant such an alarm. I think a dog would be a nice addition to our family and I might think that way yet. Thanks so much hon for your thought and opinions I'm always grateful for them

Dogs is friend of human, but the home security system is one of effective way to protect the property. Nowadays, you can either sign monitoring contract with security company or install a GSM based DIY alarm systems.

your saying exactly what I'm thinking at this point. I'm in a smaller city 40,000 our crime rate is fairly low. John my husband is a big man and we are talking over the dog issue. So why add the extra cost right away if we don't need to. I'm so on the fence about this issue one side says it will give me peace of mind the other save money. still not sure which side wins .But i value your your comments
thank you

we dont have that technology in our country!:) well am a Filipina, and not all houses have alarm systems. only those who are affluent can afford that, or to be exact, will be needing that. in our country, we dont depend on alarm system, we just pray that no one will be breaking into the house!hehe but seriously, a large percentage of our people are living below the poverty line that alarm systems are not in the priority list. some of our people here have a greater concern than alarm systems like housing, potable water, employment and even day to day food consumption. that's the reality here.. not everyone, but there are really some who are experiencing that!

well I'm far from affluent here in Canada .I live on a small disability pension and my husband works 60+ hours for us to get by. I know to some people having the INTERNET is a luxury or even clean water. I myself spent the first 3 years of my illness living far below the poverty level and without my mom would have never survived . So asking about an alarm system is just a sign of me wanting to feel secure in my first home which is a very big deal to me because i never thought it would happen. I wanted my feloow Mylot friends to help with opinions if an alarm system was really worth the money.

We have also a home alarm system. We always put it on when we leave the house and at night time and sometimes when we are home too. I think a lot of people here in the US use alarm systems and I do believe that it helps. I'm new here in the US so that's only what I think I may be wrong.
Now I don't think having an alarm system is a waste of money. At least in my mind I have some peace when I am outside or when I am sleeping.
Now is it really effective? Does it protect our homes? I don't know. When I was in Canada I knew people who were complaining about it because even with an alarm system people still had their homes stolen. By the time the police arrives the thieves are already gone and took the things they wanted.
But still I do think that it's not a waste of money. Even if the police doesn't arrive in time I'm sure there are some burglar that would not dare going into the house when the alarm system goes on.

Now see you bring up an excellent point about police response times. I hadn't even thought about that issue. I wonder if there is any way to find out that answer. I guess the alarm companies are going to be very forthcoming with it because they would lose customers and surely our police force want to project the best face forward. But still it does say something if you home has the alarm system and your neighbor's doesn't which is more likely to get hit by a robber? Thanks so much for bring this up and giving me even more food for thought
