I usually try to buy at least one of every property, solely to limit others from gaining the ability to build any sort of house/hotel. Most people go for railroads and utilities. Nice in the beginning, but a single hotel can amount to several payouts from a railroad (with all four in possession).
Of course, the obvious answers are to gain Boardwalk and Park Place, and the green and yellow properties, but for survival, I still maintain that preventing others from gaining the ability to build is the most important. If you can get even one full set, when nobody else can build you can make a pretty good run in the game that way.

Sounds like you not only know what property to buy, but you have a game plan also. Ty 4/answer!

i really don't like this game. my son, he is always begging me to play. i didn't care for it as a child and i really don't like to play it now. i try to suck it up and play with my son every once in a green moon just so i don't have to hear him beg. it is a great lesson in investing and saving

Yes we used to love playing this game as kids - except my sister used to try stealing from the bank when she could.
It depends on what version you have - but I always think the dark blue (mayfair and park lane in my version) are the best to buy, having all the railway stations is good too.
However I always try to get all of one colour and build hotels as quickly as I can. If I have one block with hotels and the other person has none then it's only a matter of time no matter where the block is.
Scrabble is also a favourite of mine
