My husband is currently serving Iraq and will be home in the next couple of months. We want to go on a vacation when he gets home, just him, our son, and me. We aren't sure where we want to go. We know of some things that we want to do. We want to go swimming, biking, miniature golfing, fly kites, go to the movies, and other things that would be fun for a four-year-old. He loves the outdoors.
We live in Iowa and want to keep it close to home. We are willing to travel to the surrounding states. If you have any ideas where you think we should go, let me know. Thanks.

I'm telling you that you need to go to the Wisconsin Dells! You can go to Noah's Ark waterpark that has attractions for little kids as well as water slides for you and your husband. There's all kinds of attractions from mini-golf, to go-carts to you name it they have it! It's also only a half day drive which would be cool. Find a camp ground that's forty-five minutes away and you'll save a whole lot of money!
If you want something closer, try Fun City in Burlington, Iowa. Our kiddos loved it! They have an indoor and outdoor waterpark, a huge arcade, bowling alley, laser golf, go-carts, all right there in the hotel! Burlington has other attractions like movie theaters and the what not that you're looking for.

I think it sounds to me like you need a good campground close to some local interesting sites where you can all just relax together. I would check out the Good Sam Guide and find the perfect place. You can even rent an RV if you choose to.
