I have a pair of geese, and this is their first year laying. we got them last year as gooslings. I didnt think they would lay this spring, then noticed the male, Harry, covering something up,so I went to look and he had a big nest behind the hens dogloo house with two goose eggs and a chicken egg. i kept an eye on the pair and they were on and off the nest all day, even going for a walk in the yard when my youngest son opened their gate. the eggs felt cold when i checked them while they were being shooed back into their yard. I havent noticed them getting "cosey" so dont know if the eggs are fertile. how soon can I tell if they are, and how many eggs will they normally lay?also how long does it take to hatch them out?

oh I am so jealous. We had a wonderful pair of African goslings last spring, but in the autumn someone stole them. I am sure they would be laying now too.
I don't know the answers to yoru questions but you might could find them at www.feathersite.com they are a pretty informative website.

Although I cannot answer your question, I wanted to say that I had much the same experience with my geese. I had two females and a male, and a nest of eggs. Ours never ended up hatching either before the geese ended up abandoning them. I do not know if they sit for a certain amount of time and then just know that they are not going to hatch or what, but your story sounds very similar to mine.
