i see a lot of beggars on the street. most of them have really good bodies and could work instead of just asking for alms so i tend not to give money. sometimes i give my sandwich or crackers to them. but most of the time i walk pass them because my parents say that they are just part of a syndicate or they will just use the money for rugby or drugs. am i bad for not giving to them? do you give alms to beggars?

Here in india the maximum number of beggers can be found at temples and other places of worship. I avoid giving money at such places as once you give to one a whole lot of them would surround you for more. I do help beggers who are diabled or are too old to work.

That's interesting. You could see whole bunch of beggards near the temples? Wow i can imagine how this picture looks. In U.S you also might see some beggards hanging over from place to place. I am giving money to some of them. First thing i am looking at is the way they dress and talk. If their cloth is dirty and they look loke life was really bad for them, yes i will give whatever i have evailable.
Usually the amount consists of coints. What ever extra coins i have i will give it to them.

Sometimes I do. It depends on my mood and their situation. Whenever I see beggars along the busy highway, like the street children, I do not give them anything. It's like pushing them to beg more on the streets, instead of teaching them independence. Or the more they will propagate along the road which sometimes causes the traffic to slow down. And also it is not good for our place when foreigners see these beggars on the road, since it reflects the condition of our economy.
I agree with your parents, it's true that there are sydicates who make use of these innocent people to work for them. I sometimes see some kids gambling the money that they earned from begging. The same with rugby abuse. I don't think it's bad that you did not give anything to these people. But still it depends on you. Let me tell you a story about a mother and a child who went knocking at our door. She told me that she neede money because her child needs medicine which she cannot afford and so on... all of a sudden she was crying. I pity her , so I gave her 50 pesos, and that's all I have in my pocket. She thanked me and went away. After a year, while I was in my shop, there was a woman with a child again who is asking for some money, and you are right, it was her again. Same old story, tears flowed down on her face...she is fooling me. I did not entertain her. I just said no. A very firm "no". And she did not hear any word from me. She just went away. I have learned my lesson. After that, I just give to bantay bata if I have some extra money. And any amount will do ,because I just want to be sure that the little extra money that I have will really help the needy.
