With as fast as these boards move, how do you keep your discussion on top?

Once you have started a discussion, how does a person keep it on top so that it can get more responses?
There are multiple discussions started every hour in each category, on some of them I see 15 or more responses and on others I see only 2 or 3. Is this a timing thing?
What are the best time frames for starting a discussion?
Does a response kick it back up to the top of the list?
and I noticed that when I responded to someone who commented on my discussion, mu post count didn't go up. We don't get credit for keeping the discussion going by responding to those who comment?
I had responded to a few people in my first discussion with more questions and they didn't come back in and give me an answer, is there a notification that someone responded to your comment?
IS the number of responses important?
Or is quality more important than quantity?
I also seen others talking about getting notification in email....is that your personal email or the email here in mylot?
I would hope that they would notify us here in mylot, as I don't check my personal email daily.
I feel like I'm being a pest asking more questions, but I was hoping some of you experienced myloters could give me suggestions on keeping a discussion on top for more responses.
Thanks :)
