How many masks do you wear in life?

Moving about in the world, we are not always allowed to be ourselves. How many masks do you have to put on in a day, a week, a month? Or have you lost count already?

I wore a mask of ice for two years. One of iron for a few years after that..last year I swore to stop lying unless it was absolutely necessary. To let my walls down more. So now, most of the time I truly am who I am..to the world. In a dangerous situation, in one where people think they can play with my head and get away with it..I suppose I slip into the character of someone who they can't hurt. Who doesn't fear them (which I don't truly, but depending..some people can get my adrenaline pumping), who may in fact be scarier than they are. To me, today..my masks..the faces I allow people to see..are all pieces of myself. I guess I truly am a complicated person because no matter how many of them I wear..there's always more. But even if they are masks, it doesn't mean they hold part of the truth. my "scary" mask, though tells them that I'm tougher than them..which may or may not be the truth..it shows them a piece of my darkness. The side of me I don't fully loose because it could have repercussions it could land me in jail for lol. Just a peek. A glance into a person I could suddenly become if I so chose. Other times people will see a shy, meek little girl. Which is more body language than expression..it's when I wish people to leave me alone. It doesn't mean I'm meek, though I may be a bit shy that moment..it's kind of like when a mouse curls into a ball, trying to make itself smaller, unnoticeable. But..it's all my choice. It's what I choose to show people. I guess that's what happened when you learn to lie so well, you become a great actress (it also probably doesn;t help I understand a bit of the human mind lol). But yeah..I haven't counted how many masks. I don't wear them everyday. I'm mostly a recluse..though not exactly by choice, so I don't have to deal with my family everyday..and I don't talk very much to them constantly, so the masks are usually necessary. These days at least. A Every Month? I may wear four masks.

Isn't there a saying about 'all truths are but a fragment of the whole?' I actually find it more comfortable to become a different part of me in front of different people. It doesn't mean I'm lying to them, I'm simply exercising the part of me which they prefer to be around. End day, they are all 'me', just a different side of who I am.

I don't really care for being fake, being someone somebody else wants me to be. I like to just be myself and if people don't like it, who cares. I can admit when I was younger I tried to be someone I wasn't just to impress others, but I soon grew out of that. I realized that it doesn't matter what people think of you, just what you think of you. That is all that matters is your opinion of yourself.

I try to be like that amids friends and loved ones, but at work its a different story. They think it's 'unprofessional' to be who I am, and I'm struck at work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. It gets trying :(

I try to keep as few masks as I can. But my character doesn't really suit my job (love the work, hate the people) so I have to be someone else when I'm working. I only keep the friends that take me as I am.
