Creating a website

Hi all! I have a website but have stopped advertising it. It needs a major overhaul but I can't figure out how to do what I want. Even when I asked my good friend who is a whiz with puters; we still couldn't get it to do what I want. Well maybe I should explain. I used Bravenet's free web hosting and their website building capabilities cause I know NOTHING about creating a website! I like the colors and the basic layout but want to change a few tiny things. One thing I want is to have content boxes on only one side of the page not both as it is now. They had other layouts that have that but the colors were not the same and I don't know how to change the colors. I have looked up and downloaded layout templates and even a a layout editor. I still can't figure this out. My problem is that I can't figure out HTML programming. I have tried but with my health issues I just get dreadfully confused and end up with a huge headache. I understand CSS even less. For this reason I use a visual editor. If anyone can offer me any suggestions or help I would appreciate it so much. I really need to get my website up and running so I can make some sales. My health and my special needs toddler prevent me from going back to work so I am using craft fairs and sales from my website (I haven't done Ebay or any of the other sites cause I can't figure those things out either - I actually posted about that a bit ago) to supplement my hubby's income which is under $50k supporting a family of 5. Thanks to anyone that has anything they can offer.

Here is a link to a great free web page builder that uses WYSIWYG technology. You don't need to understand HTML to use it. http://cvs.nvu.com/download/nvu-1.0-win32-installer-full.exe It works really well and it is very easy to use.

sorry. that link is http://www;justfree.com. By the way, if you have a domain, they host that for free, too, and you can get a WordPress blog, too.

Hi Maildumpster, Sorry to hear about your situation. Can you post your site path here so I can take a look? I know HTML well and it's a easy thing to change CSS code if you just change template back to 1 column you want then change CSS code would do. Here are few suggestions: 1. using free site to start out probably is ok for now, but later you might want to consider to have a host of you own with domain name. 2. You might want to exchange links with sites that related to your niche (craft) to get more traffic. A site without traffic is useless. 3. Do you have time to write some kind of intruction of how to do your craft from step-by-step. If you do, I have some idea that might work out for you and I have resources of where to sell them. send me a message if you are interest.

Well first of all you're intending on building up a site that is going to make sales ,then I suggest that you DON'T use the free web hosting since they aren't that very good to begin with. What you should do with our site is get a cheap hosting service for about $7 for 3 months of hosting. But to seriously know how to make your site work the way that you want it to, you have to get out and buy book about learning HTML and CSS. After all, you do want to make you site look different from the other 1000's of sites that are using templates. But if you don't think that you can learn HTML and CSS, then you can just pick up a free/cheap HTML visual editor like your doing right now. However, in the long run learning HTML is the best way to go.

I know what you mean. I am building a new site while trying to figure out what to do with an old one myself. You can do it without knowing css. Have you looked at W3schools? The site has tutorials for just about everything web-ish. I need to hunker down and get through some css tuts myself but I am way too tired to try it yet. There is also a site called "I love jack daniels" that has a css cheat sheet. You will still need to look at a tut to understand what each expression does but its a help. Another thing you can do is find a website you like and then look at its page source using the command from your browser window. This isn't so you can steal the code but so you can look through it and see how each command line is reflected in the finished page. It is an excellent way to learn how code works. Hope these suggestions help!

I'm horrible with HTML. Sorry. I am just trying out a freewebsite on http://www.freewebs.com maybe you can try that? I think its fun but its just a place to post blogs & and poetry. I just got started. Hope it works out though. HTML is crazy. Maybe you should get a book on it! There are plenty of good ones out there!

Good luck with your website. I've been having a major headache starting mine up because I get so confused. I'm just about ready to save up some money and have someone do it! I haven't even finished checking all the responses to my discussion on my web site problems. You might want to check those and see if you get any good ideas from them.

I use sitekreator. It's a pretty easy template-based free site. That might be worth a quick try to see how much you can do with it.

its not that tough to learn HTML and CSS. there is v.good site where you can learn the basics within 1 day. check this site, www.w3schools.com. It is totally free and will also give you sample examples and work-area where you can test /experiment your codes. I am sure it will help you.
