Almost every language got good demand. I think Java programmers are the highly paid in the language category. but to get a job in Java is very difficult as well. Its not because it don't have much openings. its because interviews are very difficult to get through. Other languages like C, C++, .Net are also in very good demand. But if I learn a language targeting at getting a job then I would go for a language which is not known to many people. For example PHP, Python, Perl, Ruby etc. I expect to see more openings for these languages in the near future. Already there are many openings for PHP and very less people to fill those jobs.

According to some magazines that I have read, the skill/language that is currently in the most demand is anything .NET. So take your pick; Visual Basic, C++, J++, or C# in .NET. If you aren't sure...i'd say the best to go with is C++. Few are good and there are always a demand for good C++ programmers.

C and C++ is ever-green language. So, first get the basic ideas on these languages and then move on to the latest technologies... like J2EE or J2ME..
.Net is also good for some extent..
