What drives people to go on murderous rampages?

I can understand that some people may kill for revenge or in anger; or even that some may kill for profit but what can possibly cause these incidents where someone like the Virginia Tech killer goes on a rampage arbitrarily shooting dozens of innocent people, people who had not harmed him in any way and that he had no cause to harm? Do you think that the society that we live in encourages this kind of breakdown, considering that such incidents have become almost common in the recent past or at least in the past century?

Not sure what drives it, but part of the problem is inadequate mental health care, particularly in America. We think we have a problem now, just wait until all these war vets come home.

Yup, the thing about war is that even the survivors don't escape unscathed.I was just reading something the other day and it kind of stayed with me. It's about the effect of mandatory military service in Israel, I maybe misquoting a bit but it said something like : 'You're taken from your family when you are eighteen and then you go through unspeakable horrors, dragging people out of their homes in the middle of the night, kicking down doors, killing. And then years later you go back and everything's supossed to be normal but then one day your girlfriend doesn't want to let you in the house and...well, it's not like you've never been in that situation before.' We have started institutionalizing violence as an acceptable form of interaction.

I think he was drunk, it wasn't a conscious malicious act like the Virginia tech killings were, though I suppose you could say that anyone who is callous enough to drink and drive (especially when we have so many cases of pavement killings) is a terribel person.
