In my town they recently closed the birthing unit in our hospital where my daughter was born. The result is all pregnant woman having to go an hour out of town to deliver their babies. and even more recently a lady gave birth to a baby in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. Whats even MORE of a kick in the pants, they make you PAY for the ambulance ride, and that my friends is no cheap trip. an hour in an ambulance. What are some things that I can do as one person to help the community re-open the unit ? any suggestions ? has this happened where you live ? and wouldnt you be angry ? i have no car, so if i decide to have another child, how will i get home from the hospital an hOUR away ? Every mom in town is angry!

This happened in my country as well, and I really felt so bad for all these women, who now had to go so far to give birth. I know that a lot of effort was put into keeping the birthing department open, but nothing seemed to be able to change their minds, the politicians had already made up their minds, and I am sure that the money was already spent elsewhere as well.
If I were you, I would get in touch with all the mothers, pregnant mothers etc. that I could. I would form a group for the reinstatement of the birthing unit, and I would do it quick before they do relocate the funds. I would get every woman and the women's husbands to sign a petition, and I would make sure to get a lot of women, men and children together for a demonstration. Remember though that a demonstration is only as good as the media coverage it gets.
The media plays a huge role in this. Write letters to the editior, get all the women you know to do the same. Approach your favorite writer at your local newspaper, and find an ally - together I am sure you will reach far.
Without the media's support, I really do not think that you will get far. Sit down with some friends who are also angered about this issue, write up some points, and bring it to the media. Right down all the plusses and negatives about closing the unit or reopening. Make sure that you seem what you are doing, do a lot of research, and I know you will get far.
Good luck! I sure hope that you will be able to succeed. Access to a hospital, and access to a birthing unit should be available to all women, men and children, and it should be within a reasonable distance.

Not only all that!! but there are been people being born there for NEARLY 100 years! They had a protest yesterday and a lady who was born there 78 years ago, plus all her 5 children and 16 grandchildren where all born there too! Its' just not fair to close it now with no other hospital around!

No it is definitely not fair, but unfortunately many of these decision are made with the wallet and not by the heart. This is why action has to be taken now, while the news is fresh, while the people still have it on their mind, and while the media are still keeping an interest in covering the issue, and I think people in your time are doing the right thing by demonstration. Good luck.

And with reason , thats horrible and awfully far to travel . Can you and others maybe hold a walk-athon or something like that ???
Maybe a knitting-bee .
I am no business woman but what about getting ahold of someone in charge of the hospital and see if they have any suggestions ...
I am sorry you all have to deal with this , its not right , especially for the babies to travel that far .
GOOD LUCK ALL ....

There are so many other important issues - space exploration, sending people to war, arms, paying politicians obscene amounts of money, sports.
Forget health - except for useless research - the homeless and education. It's the same in Australia.

I'd be pretty mad too hun. I would suggest you speak to all the women in town, not just mums but all the females. Band together and write a petition to the local authority, complain and ask why the unit has been closed. Contact your local radio station and let them know, the media love to take up cases like this. Keep the pressure on, you need to know why the unit was closed, and why you are being penalised like this.
