"Schindler's List" and "Life is Beautiful" are both wonderful, yet terribly sad. I doubt I have to say why.
"The Remains of the Day" and "Gods and Monsters" are both heart-wrenching also, and realistic.
And it may be an unusual choice, but the first half of "Full Metal Jacket" still haunts me every time I see it at the video store or on TV.
I can name a few other, independent Canadian films, but I don't know if you would be familiar with them.

A Walk To Remember...the first time I watched it I was watching it alone and as the movie progressed my eyes started watering....it was bad =[
