Buying lottery... a waste of money?

I stop buying lottery because I think they're a waste of money. I've always believed that the people that win lotteries are those who are less fortunate, without jobs or homes. My dad however, buys it every week and spends lots on it. He thinks if you buy, there's always a chance. Do you buy?

That i am such a sore loser in any gambling & i have a feeling of repulsion of any form of gambling, helps prevent me buying lottery's - i see it as catalyst to false hopes. Some would say that spending a few amounts doesnt really hurt the budget, I'd say otherwise, it hurts the very foundation of your financial literacy. Well, usually government run lotteries supports many charity run agencies could be a better equalizer to the idea than the idea of finding riches. Impulsive spenders should not even begin to think doing lottery, but i guess they are the brunt of the customers of these things. By their are more millionaires made in a month than lotteries had made in a year.

You must have some bad experiences with gambling. I agree gramble is a wasted. Sometimes I don't even think there are actual jackpot winners here. That it's all a scam. Unlike the states and Canada, winners here don't show themselves. Too many mob involvement.

I think if you are a lukcy person who can always iwn when buying lottery, it is not a waste of money, but if you are unlucky , you may not win anything even when you have bought the lotto for ten years. I think it is no good to spend a hundred everytime for the jackpot but a few dollars per week is accpetable.I will buy everyweek for fun, may be I will spend two dollars everytime.

I agree. If it's your time then you don't need to spend hundreds on it. Good luck, hope you get jackpot one day.

My partner always says that you can't win if you don't play. And I know that is a common saying...but I can't help but think that the money is wasted because he doesn't win anything in return. Of course, he argues with me that there is always a chance that he might win...and what if he doesn't play that time and the numbers that he likes to play finally come up? *sigh* I am not saying anything to him about it....except that I prefer that he not spend an insane amount on it. 5 bucks here and there is ok...but dropping 20 bucks each time becomes insane to me. I can think of a lot of things that I would much rather spend that money on than a piece of paper that he will most likely throw away anyways.

I very rarely buy lottery tickets, you spend more than you win. But people buy the dream of one day getting rich and that I guess if not abused is a good thing. I think one should just buy in moderation.

I know what you mean. I think by the time my dad wins a jackpot, he'll get be even with the money with his winning. Sort of like an bank holding you money, except you might not get your money back.

Rarely. I use to like if I saw someone win a instant lottery ticket it front of me then i would buy a instant. I won from that ticket but it was only $20.00. I was still happy. I filled my gas tank up with gas.I don't play it all the time though.

Good for you. I did win a large sum once $1,000 CDN. It was also an instant ticket, my aunt got it for me. It was awsome. But, I paid off some of my loan with it.

Nope...I am to tight with my funds to risk it on a lotto with low odds of winning especially when it is a lottery with multiple states involved.

Good for you. I rather use that money to buy something useful. I also believe in earning it myself.

Yes, I buy a ticket for the national lottery twice a week. I pay six euros for the ticket and this gives me three chances of winning. Last Saturday, I won fifteen euros, a three euro scratch card and a one euro scratch. A couple of weeks back, my wife won fifty eight euros. It could be a waste of money but maybe all six of my numbers will come out sometime and make me a millionaire...I wish!
