I think music is a good catharsis, that is why sometimes we are drawn to music that matches our mood. Armed with that information, though, we can also use music to help alter our mood, as mentioned in one of the other posts.
Music seems to lift me out of depression, if I choose something uplifting. On the other hand, if I want to wallow in my depression....and let's face sometimes we do want to......I play something that reminds me of why I percieve life to be difficult, or painful.

I think some music allows my emotions come to the surface, some times I deliberatley put a tune( Radiohead, Linkin Park, Pink Flloyd) on to make myself depressed. I do that because sometimes I bottle my pain up and it's a way of unloading it.Yes it can dig a deeper hole, but I find that it's a kind of 'good' depression.

I agree music can be the best solution to reduce depression, but what kind of music? it depends of one's preferred style, but also depends the type of depression. When I have a depression caused by harm from others I usually listen to Metal music, some songs deal with injustice for example. When my depression is caused by loneliness, I prefer sensual music, generally without lyrics or with soft lyrics. It depends on the cause of the depression that's all I can say

I'm not sure that certain music really triggers depression, but I know that it can help to alter your mood. I'm unusual in the fact that I have a habit of listening to depressing music when I'm depressed... the same goes for angry music when I'm angry. For some reason, when I try to listen to upbeat music when I'm in one of those moods it seems to only upset me more.
