The Budget, How To Stick To It

Philippines
April 20, 2007 7:23am CST
When I went to the supermarket tonight to pick up some items, I was startled to see how much so few items can cost. Since I am aware of how much prices have gone up these last few months, I have been cutting on some goods where it is feasible. Yet, I still find that the usual amount I have set aside for supermarket items just couldn't suffice anymore. Now that I am really having a hard time to stick to my budget, I am mapping out some strategies to be able to cut on expenses without sacrificing our daily needs. Is this situation true to most of us here in mylot?

Yes I agree with you my friend. It is so hard to stick to our budget nowadays.Prices have gone high and some commodities are also increasing their values. On our part we list all those necessary things needed and we prioritize the top 20 in our lists and we will only buy the remaining items on our lists if we have some spare money left.

This is what's happening to most of us nowadays. We keep our list to the basic items. However, my basic items always include chocolates and ice cream for my sick child. These are his favorites and I will not deny it that he is favored, in terms of food, because of his condition.

I would have to say yes. I know I have to stick to a very tight budget. It is hard though because I am on the road all of the time.

Yes, it is different when you are on the road most of the times. Eating out is something which you cannot shake off. All of us around here knows how expensive it is to be eating out always.

I just now posted a discussion on budgets and added some links that are just wonderful. I added one link to a free Ebook that is totally FREE for a limited time only. It is 300 and some pages long. You may be interested in the links that I posted. they are wonderful to help with budgets or even investing and starting a business. Budgets are great and very helpful if you can stick to it and not waver at all. That is the hard part.

The first step to creating a budget is to determine a baseline for your income and your expenses. Document everything that you know you normally spend throughout a month, as well as what you can expect to receive monetarily. Note only the expenses and income that you can count on, since they are the basis for your economic standpoint. After you've got your list of incomes and expenses put together, it's time to determine exactly how your income works. Figure out how much you make per month through your job as well as any other payments that you can count on. Next comes the hard part: figuring out all of your expenses. Since you probably have many more different expenses than you do incomes, it's easy to overlook some expenses that you may partake in. Document them as best as you can.

I know how you feel. It's all very well budgeting but some people, usually those with plenty of money, will tel you you need to budget because they assume you're not when it's merely the fact that you don't have the money to budget with in the first place. Like you, I have cut costs as much as possible. They can't really be cut much more but I still find it hard to have enough money. You could have a look at my frugal tips at http://freepracticalfinance.moonfruit.com The site is under construction but there are a few shopping tips. I follow most of the advice and, while I still have no money left, my negative balance is lower than it would be! I hope it helps.

I live n a tight budget for a family of five. Moving from Ohio to Florida..everything is much higher down here. The first thing you can do is make a list of what you need when you go shopping and stick to it. Use coupons and try to only buy what is on sale. Sometimes if store are close by it pays to buy to shop at more than one store for sale items. Go to outlet stores or store with cheaper items. Such as : Groceries - Save-a-lot, Aldi's Cleaning items/Shampoos ect - Dollar tree, Family Dollar or Dollar general When you see an item you use alot. But two when it is on sale. That way you have enough to last until the item goes back on sale. Make as much stuff for dinner from scratch that you can. You will save money. Eating out and buying those pre packaged meals can get expensive. Where exactly do you need help in cutting your budget?

In my place, grocery items hardly go on sale and, neither are there coupons to cut out so we can buy our items at discounted prices. What goes on sale are mostly clothes, shoes and bags. I shy away from buying these items already unless it is necessary. However, sticking to a previously prepared list of groceries will help greatly.

Hi. I see we're from the same country. Yes, prices have gone up a lot the past few months and a thousand pesos nowadays just doesn't buy a lot of things. I budget by doing the following: 1. I make a list of the things I HAVE to buy and buy only the things on the list. Since there is a supermarket where I always do my grocery shopping, I already know what aisle a certain item is found, so I just go straight to those aisles. 2. I try to buy the cheaper but still quality brands. But if I'm trying out the brand, I try the smaller package/container first so if I do not like it at all, I do not waste a lot. For example, when my baby was still small, we're trying to find the cheapest diaper that would work for him. We tried out the EQ brand, both the EQ Dry and the EQ regular. They have mini packs of 4 available, so that was what I bought at first. EQ regular turned out to be not so good for my son, so I didn't continue using it. Good thing it was only a four pack. EQ Dry, however, was good, and it was cheaper than the other quality brands, so I started my son on it and he's still using it until now. Quality does not always mean that you have to pay a premium, however, too cheap may mean that the quality is inferior. What you want is value for money. 3. Don't do the grocery when you're hungry. They say that you tend to get more stuff, especially food, when you are hungry. 4. Try to limit the number of times that you go to the grocery. This saves money a number of ways. First, the more times you go, the more you will be exposed to temptations. Second, with more things to buy and a limited budget, you will be forced to just the essentials. Third, if you have to bring a car to the supermarket, you go less times, pay less for gas and parking. 5. Try not to bring your kids. If you are the soft hearted mother, you would be hard pressed to refuse if your kid asks to buy something from the grocery shelves. If you still want to buy something for them, at least you'll be buying something that you know will be within your budget and not overbudget (just because your kid won't stop pestering you to buy this, mom!) That's all I can think of for now.

Now days it is hard to keep on a budget. I know 50 dollars worth of groceries doesn't even last me a week anymore. I have to clip coupons and buy on sale. Plus I go to the stores that have bulk foods. They seem to have good prices for certain things. I also go to the dollar stores. I get some great deals there. With gas prices so high now, Its hard to shop around. I usually just take a bus to the places I need to go to.

Yes, it's really the tight days now. I also try to buy items on sale but, these have gone rarer still. It is good that you have a lot of options where you are, to cut on your expenses.

Budgeting money - Sticking to my budget
the best way to avoid overspending when you go shopping or doing your grocery is to make a list of items you basically need. prioritize the items based on their necessities at homes. once you have bought the most important ones and if you still have extra money, perhaps you could still add more items. After all, learn how to balance the money you receive and the money you spend.
• Philippines

Yes, we really have to balance the income and the expenditures. I have also learned to buy on a need basis. Before, I used to buy groceries once a week. Now, it will be twice a week. I also go to the public market, most items are much cheaper there.

Your feeling life is expensive, its true not only for you its for everyone. because you want to think where the problems is may be due to the tax, lke due to traders or lack of production, incerased demand etc. You are thinking to decrease your daily expense you can grow some of the vegitables and fruits and if you are using vehicle then try to reduce it. you can reduce your telephone use like this you can reduce your life expense also

thank you for your ideas, kavinpurams. it is true that taxes are really high, and it seems prices of almost everything has been going high. this makes our income hardly cope with the rising prices. thus, we are forced to cut on our expenses if we have only the same amount to spend for the usual daily needs.

I am afraid to say that this has been the biggest problem for me - I just can't follow my Budget. Each month it starts well, then in the mid-way, I start to run errands as a result of which I often struggle hard to accommodate expenses within stipulated budget. Regarding price hike of essential commodity - it is difficult to keep the expenses intact without much sacrifices. The best way of doing such situation is to have ample stock of preservable goods and commodities so that you need not buy those when the prices have gone up. Also, availing discounts and coupons are a great way to save money and keeping upto your budget. Saying so, I must appreciate once more that we have never been able to manage expenses within budget when prices have gone up.

Inflation gets us unguarded always. Anyway, no matter what happens, we will always find some ways to cope just as you did. For us here, it will not be the discount coupons which we can count on, it will be as to how well we strategize, in order to come up with the best solution. And this is what I will be doing from day to day.

Yes, I think there is a need to stick with the budget. Unless one is very well-off, it always pays to keep an eye on the expenditure. I know things get ridiculous when a packet of MacDonald's fries went up by TWENTY FIVE PERCENT. And the last time I had it wasn't even as long as years back. But yea, I know MacDonalds' is poor. They are just making BILLIONS a year. Have pity on them. They need more money.

We really have to put up with unscrupulous businessmen, yes, that is true. The truth is, we have cut off the eating out thing. We only do that once in a while. Items like french fries are also out from the items we buy - we make some out of fresh potatoes. They taste just as good if not better. These prices going up, make us come out with new ideas to beat them.

I think it is the same for most of the mylot members as the prices of goods will generally when times go by. If your income does not increase that mean your purchasing power decreases. The only way I can cut my expenses withou sacrificing my daily needs is to by the discounted products. In the supermarket, I can always buy some products selling at a discounted price when it is going to close soon, some of the goods like the meat and vegetables will be selling at a much lower price, I will wait until the price is down,I save alot of money by doing this.

Your strategy will be perfect if there is a grocery store which is about to close/stop operations. But since they hardly close down, maybe I will be on the lookout for items on sale as you have hinted.

Yes indeed, cost of goods have been soaring. Terrible. I've definitely experienced this before. I try to keep to my budget by bringing only a limited amount of money to the supermarket so that I don't overspend. No cards as well for the same reason. I find it helps. With limited money, I am forced to decide what I really need and avoid buying stuff that aren't so needed.
• Philippines

That no credit card idea is being patronized by me, too. It is on the items which we really need which I cannot cut on. It is very difficult if we overspend because, the money we set aside for emergencies will also be touched. Neither will it be wise to be thinking that we have some credit lines to hold on to in cases of emergencies. That will also bring us down. Yes, it is true that we are only left with one choice now, take only the needed stuffs.

It is very important to stick to your budget or before you know it you will be way behind. I know that groceries ect have started to go up in price. I have started to not purchase the little extras like chips, cookies, ice cream. These are now only bought once in a while as a treat for the kids. If you have an angel food ministries in your area, this is a great way to save on groceries. It is for everyone no matter what your income. Once a month you order your weekly groceries from them and it is only $25. They usually give you enough food for a full weeks worth. You can go on their website www.angelfoodministries.com and check the locations and the menu for the month. I do this in the summer and usually by the end of the summer my freezer is full to help out during the winter months.

That is a sure good help from the minitries in your place. I may not like to admit it, but we do not have it here in our country. The government though have put up stores where prices are a little lower, but neither do we have it here in our locality. But we have stores which go on sale once in a while. Groceries though hardly come with discounts. So we have to think of other ways.
