To be a great writer you should read alot, and write alot . . .Practice makes perfect right? So do think that they had Mylot in mind for that? Are we actually doing our homework here? Or are we more or less just stalling from the novel that has us stumped? For me I think It's a little bit of both... How about You?

Yes, we must read a wide range of other writings. We must also practice. I do this in a weekly writing group with writing prompts. MyLot is actually slowing me down from completing my novel. Actually, it is complete. I had a friend read it and she gave it back to me with a bunch of notes. I did sit down and write for more than an hour to "fix" things. Now I have to plant myself in front of WORD on the screen and make the necessary changes to perfect my novel. MyLot has been a total distraction preventing me from getting the job done.

MyLot has been a total distraction for me as well, yet here I am again, saying....just one more, after receiving a rejection letters, I've sat back down with my novel and am going over it again with a fine toothed comb, and I have actually changed my opening sentence and a few little words here and there . . . I'm hoping to write children's books...How about you what's your genre?

I'm sorry you got rejected. They say that most writers do at first. How many companies did you send your work to?

all4ucnc, I'm writing a children's novel as well about the challenges of overcoming a bully. What is your children's novel going to be about?

I think it depends what you're doing here. For me, a part of being here is getting ideas for articles to write for other paying sites and to promote those articles. That means that I'll read through topics that catch my eye because even if I'm not interested in the general field. But then again, I'm also out to make a little bit of change here, too. And that is definitely distracting me from writing my novel or articles that will pay a whole lot more. It's easier to post here off the top of my head than to think up a topic, research it, and write up a formal, 500-word article. It's also easier than getting my characters from my head to the screen in a way would make them live for other people. Writing practice is good, but I need to focus less on practice and more on actual writing! LOL

The prerequisite of becoming a good writer is to gain experiences either fro your own or from extensive reading. PLUS ..look at things with a wide open gaze!

I think it helps from the "homework" standpoint. You learn to express your views in writing, plus you learn from other viewpoints. Am I using it to stall? You bet! I'm not a creative writer - I write for businesses. But I don't feel like marketing all the time and coming here helps me take a break yet still keep on writing.

Hahaha... I'm going through some of that stalling now! This forum is a bit addictive, isn't it? The problem is that people don't really post things that are long enough for anybody to learn anything, except how to get many responses- my new personal goal :) Books are still the way to go in terms of learning how to write. You pick up a lot of detail, style and content.

MyLot helps me become a better writer in terms of focusing on description as well as clarity. I think MyLot is a great help...plus with the income you make, it may help you pay a bill as you're locked in your basement typing furiously on your novel (perhaps) or as you're in a cafe somewhere scribbling to a notepad (idealistic starving artist image here).

Yes, I do think that when we take our time to enter a passionate, thoughtful or researched reply that we are doing out homework! Please don't tell me I am the only one who does research or checks my sources before reply sometimes! LOL. And YES. I am currently transcribing my novel back into my computer because my last one crashed and I am entering it back in from hard copy before I can go forward... I SHOULD BE DOING THIS NOW. ARG!! Maybe we could check in with each other, us writers, and ask... have you done your REAL writing today?
