Well for myself I ask around to see who everyone suggests. I'd ask friends, co-workers and family. Once I have a list I'd go from there. First if I have insurance I check to see if they are on there. If I don't have insurance I then call them to see what their prices are like. I know it shouldn't be a factor but it can be. Usually by then the list is only a couple. I will then probably pick one by how the receptionists acted when I called. Were they polite, did they seem to know things, were they helpful, things like that. I will pick one from the list and try them out. If they seemed to listen, to want to actually check things out, the whole what type of doctor they are. If I liked them I'll stick with them, if not I'll try someone else from the list.

Personally,
I ask surveys about doctors. I prefer doctors recommended by my friends. You know you're with a good doctor if after a check-up there's no question in your mind about your condition. When all your questions are answered in laymans term, which you are able to understand.

The number one thing that you should look at is, Does the doctor take time to listen to you.
The next thing is, does he tell you what is happening, even if you dont want to hear it.
The last thing is he or she should not be offended if you get a second opion.

Well I would ask my friends, family, neighbors ... anyone you know enough to ask about recommendation ... ask them about their doctor ... around your area
It will probably more accurate than any other type of source, a doctor needs aso to be good at making the people he treats understood and well taken care of, so their patients is the best way to inquire about a doctor in my opinion
good luck
