Every since the Dog and Cat food recall I have been making my own Pet Chow and have had a big ant and fly problem! I have never had a problem like this before! Ants and Flies would not touch the bought dog and cat food. Is anyone having a problem like this? And I am wondering why bugs did not like the bought food? hmmm this is telling me something.
I have found if I spray around their bowls with grapefruit juice it keeps the ants away but have no idea what to do about the flies? Any Ideas? I would love them!

Wow! You make your own dog food!? I bet my Lilly & Daisy would love for you to come and visit them.
:]
I do not have an answer for your question but I wanted to say that when the pet food recall started, it crossed my mind to start making my own cat food for Zoe because about once a week I feed her wet food from a can (she has dry food out all the time) but I haven't the first clue how to do that or if I would screw it up.
My dogs only get wet food on very rare occasions. It's like a treat for them and they hadn't had any since many months prior to the recall starting and none since it went into effect. They eat dry food but I was concerned even about that because the brand I bought was made by a company that had wet food on the recall list. I quickly changed their dry food to another so called 'safe' brand.
I'm not sure why the ants and flies didn't bother your animals food before. I know if we leave wet food out at all, the ants and flies are all over it so we have to be careful. Our dogs never allow it to be around long enough to attract pests but Zoe doesn't eat all her food at once so we have to put it in the frig when she is done.
I wanted to thank you for the tip on keeping the ants away. In the summer, the ants swarm the dogs dry food bowl! It is such an issue that my husband had to come up with this contraption where the bowl is suspended by ropes so that it makes it difficult for the ants to get to it. Poor dogs have to 'bob' for their food because the bowl swings. *hah* I'm going to be sure my husband puts the grapefruit juice on the outside of the bowls and see if it helps.
I hope others come in and give you some answers to your questions. Sometimes it takes awhile for people to respond.
Good luck!

Thank You so much for replying! :) I have not figured out how to make the dry food yet but do have a good recipe for for dry dog treats they look like little cookies so they just love them. The cat food was kind of tricky I had to get chicken livers and put them through a meat grinder it made me feel a little ill. lol That is really a clever idea about suspending the bowl!! I not to sure how Jade (cat) would deal with that she would think I was up to something bad lol but Fortune and Hannah would like it! :)
