I was just reading this article about how New York is thinking of putting a tax on pet food and supplies. They say this will go towards helping animal shelters and things like that. I think it is great that they want to raise money for that but how can we be sure the money will go there. Plus I don't really think it is fair because we are already taxed enough. You can read the article here....... http://www.nysun.com/article/52861 Please tell me what you think about this.

Oh ,sorry to hear that especially for those pet lovers,if we can be sure the government will spend the money there, it is a good news, but no one know how the government will use the funds for, moreover,I think people already need to pay high tax rate in the US, it will further increase the burden,it may be even a sad news if someone cannot afford to pay the tax and have to give up their pets, then many pets may lost their owners and they may have no home,so where will the pets go if they have no one to keep them?

Goodness! I am fairly sure that we are taxed already for pet food & supplies. This is a novel way of supporting animal shelters. I guess the only way to ensure that the money goes there, is for the animal welfare agencies to report to the public, about once each year, if they received the money. I don't know about US taxation. We are taxed a lot.

I don't have any pets, but I never knew that they tax Pet food, or did they just start.

Well Brendalee we have always paid Tax on it This is one of the reasons I will not commit myself to paying so much a Month towards things like this as there have been to many scams here in the UK with it They ask you to adopt a Dog but you are not allowed to visit this Dog at all all they do is send you a letter from the Dog To me if I am paying Money to adopt a Dog why am I not allowed to visit the dog as this Dog does not just need money but also Love I also heard a few years back that someone else had adopted a Dog and paid this money every month only to find out after a few month that the Dog did not exist and neither did the Charity

Well in Australia we have a 10% gst tax on everything that we buy including pet food and supplies. Oh yes they say that it will be for this and that but how do we really know exactly what it is used for we do wish however that they would use it for the benefit of others and our pets as well but we cannot be certain. You say that we are taxed enough I think that Australia is one of the top taxed countries as well.

There is really no way to know if it goes to shelters. We live in a country where is it so acceptable to lie to people. The authorities do this all the time. Notice how they think nothing of it. The only ones who think anything of it is their enemies. Example: Republicans vs. Democrats. They use anything they can to hurt the other. We the tax payers think about it, but nobody cares what we think.

I was shocked to hear that NY is considering putting a tax on pet food. I think that is horrible and that they can find other ways to make money for shelters. Putting a tax on pet food might prevent people from getting pets in the first place which would mean more shelters would be needed. I do not think it is right for them to tax pet food. Yes, everyone there is definitely taxed enough. It would be disappointing if they passed legislation to tax pet food.

Unfortunately they will tax where they see fit. The taxing should be put on items that really are of no health benefits, such as items related to smoking, beverages that have no nutritional value, etc. I believe that by doing this the states could raise more revenue and also help deter people from using such products. But, then again, who knows.

I thought that they already taxed pet food since people don't eat it. I know, some do. However, I think they will be double dipping if people don't speak up. Pet foods is a needed item and to tax it would I hope make it so people begin to cook for their animals even more. Of course the food bill would go up and then maybe that would offset the cost of the tax. Of course again, taxes do tend to go up and up. Must think about this one.

In Oklahoma, they tax pet food. But I were you, I'd be a little miffed as well. No way will all the money from the tax reach animal shelters. That just doesn't happen. They started a lottery in Oklahoma to raise money for teacher's salaries. Less than half actually made it to the teachers. It's just an excuse to tax in the guise of being a humanitarian. I hope some people are writing some serious letters to their local officials. That and flooding their office with calls. It's just not right.

At first I wasn't sure what to make of it. Then I read the article which states a 3% tax on supplies, it doesn't mention food. Pets are expensive to have. I love my cats but there is no doubt I spend a lot of money on them just on food and litter. And I thought 3% is kind of high. BUt then I did the math. If I buy a squeaky toy for my cat that's really only another 6 cents, or a few posts on mylot! But I think it can be a good thing. Pet shelters are being over crowded. For many reasons and I think they should get all the help they can.

That's definitely not good news for us pet owners though..it's going to make it more expensive in the long run to have pets...

I think it is a good idea, in theory, to help raise money for animal shelters, but in the form of a tax on pet food it isn't such a good idea, I don't think. Pet food is an expensive product already, and like you said, it's not guaranteed to go to the animal shelters.

Well, personally, it would be Great if they were serious about using this Tax for just that purpose, but I am sure only a small portion once they did start charging it would actually go there. And here in WA State they have been charging Tax on Pet food and supplies for a long time, and I am sure there are many other states doing this as well.

I read the article and I think it sux. It is a good cause though ... but I agree that this country is already taxed enough for everything else. It's almost like paying taxes on taxes. It wouldn't surprise me if this country tried to tax the air we breathe someday.

Once again they quote the number of animals put down in NY city, I for one, being a resident of NY state get tired of supporting NY city. It gets a disproportionately large amount of tax dollars and the rest of us NYers paid for it. I personally wish NY would become a separate entity, like DC or something. Maybe then the rest of us could afford to live.

I dont think they should put extra tax on pet food.Stuff is rising as well as gas prices and let alone people can barley make out let alone havign to have pet taxes doubled on pet food and supplies.I think the government will be getting the money. It is sad.The animals do need the money but people can donate to the shelter or donate dog food, ect.without the extra pet food or supply taxes.I usally put money in the jar they have set up in Pizza Hut and other places sometimes.I know the one jar in our town goes to the shelter because my husband and his dad know the people who run it.I feel sorry for the animals in the shelter that no one wanted.I know people have situations where they cant help it but it isnt the animals fault.I do not like it when people drop dogs off on the side of the road and dont think of the dogs saftey at all Like it getting hit ,ect.Sorry I am rambling.I just feel sorry for animals in shelters.
