Protestants protest the use of images and icons in worship, the idea of other intermediaries besides Jesus (ie Mary chiefly, and the saints), the legalism of the Catholic church, the secular power structures of the church, the formalism of many Catholics - following forms and not experiencing the inward change, uhmmm, oh yeah, and infant baptism.
I think the Catholic church is coming back to a place where reconciliation may be possible, but I'm not sure protestants are willing to make the leap. A good deal of them believe the Catholic church is MYSTERY Babylon from revelation....which, if the shoe fits...there DO seem to be some dangerous practices in the Catholic church that, if not now, at least COULD be the backbone of that satanic world religion described in revelation.

the veneration of images and saints is painfully close to idol worship. Catholics try to sidestep this by saying that you don't pray or make offerings to the image but to the person that image represents - the exact same thing Hindus claim about their idols. Revelation specifically mentions worship of the IMAGE of the beast.
Also, the veneration of Mary is compared to many similar "Queen of Heaven" religions that originated from Babylonian worship.
The infallibility doctrine could also be wielded by one with evil intent to aid in the formation of the world worship of the beast.
