AVG is pretty good, in the free category. I know I've seen it get at least one virus, a Trojan. The new Norton 360 looks pretty good, tunes up the computer, too. It's a bit more than the original Norton, from the look of it.

Hello anbfriend63, for paid version, you can try Kaspersky and Symantec antivirus. Both the two are very effective in terms of detecting any malicious malwares. For free version, you can try AVG, AVAST, and AVIRA. Currently, I am using Avira AntiVir Personal Classic Edition. I have been using this software for almost two years ago. Since using this one, I have never had problems at all with regards to the overall function and system performance of my machine. Otherwise, I am very impressed and satisfied with its performance. It updates regularly and can be scheduled at your most convenient time. It is very light on resources and does not use a lot of memory. Hence, it does not slow down your computer. It detects and deletes rootkits, viruses, worms, etc. This can be downloaded at their official websites at www.free-av.com
Hope this would help to you in any way.
Have a great day!
