Can someone tell me the best way to house break a puppy? He is just over 3 months old. In the mornings he is carried outside and he goes to the bathroom. My problem is sometimes during the day he will do his business in the house. I don't catch him doing it but I can tell when he does because he tucks his tail and will go hide under the love seat or couch and won't come to me for anything. Any hints or tips that have helped you would be great if you would share them with me.

When you are not able to watch him keep him confined to a small area covered with news papers. the papers will smell but keep some of them for him to go on. Puppies like to go in the same area. now let his area get larger and keep some of those smelly papers for him to go on. but still keep taking him out side at the same time. after a time you can get rid of the papers and he will gwt the idea of going out side.

That is good advice, we were told exactly that when we got our puppy. They said just slowly keep moving the papers to the door and eventually right outside to where he is to go. Also someone bought us training pads to use, they are expensive though and didn't really work with ours because he just tore them to shreds..lol.I guess we were really lucky our dog wanted to go out from day one, he was trained in a week.I was really expecting to do a lot more work. Here is a site with a bit of info and there are lots more out there, thats what I did, just researched everything when we got our puppy. www.dogbreedinfo.com/housebreaking.htm

Thank you very much for the suggestion. My problem is I'm home with him all the time and I let him out very often. When it is not too warm I leave the patio door open so he can go outside whenever he wants. The way my house is I can't confine him to a small area unless it is in a bedroom. My living room, kitchen and dining area are all sort of opened, no doors leading from one room to the other, just front door, patio door and bedroom and bathroom doors. He is very sneaky. He will be there teasing my cat trying to get her to play then all of a sudden he is tucking his tail and hiding. He is getting some better I guess. I think I just got spoiled with my whippets, the older one was already house broken when we got her and the other one we got 3 years later when she was 6 weeks old but she did as the older dog did. That was nice and easy. hahaha

anydawn, thank you also for your suggestions. i will check out the link you posted. My son did read where Italian Greyhounds can be litter trained but I don't want to mess with a stinky litter box. My cat don't even use a litter box, she is an indoor cat but does go outside to get some exercise and to go to the bathroom.

I would set an alarm clock for every 2 or 3 hours and take him outside when it goes off.

On a daily routine he is outside more often than that. He and I go outside a lot. Never thought of that though, if he and I didn't go out so often that would be a good thing to do.

I always used crate training to assist in this particulary when I was busy and could not watch my dogs all the time. You could also keep him on a leash attached to your waist.

Thank you for the suggestions. The leash around the waist would not work for me and him though. He loves to get underfoot and try to trip me as it is. hahahahaha When I have to go to the doctor or somewhere that I can't take him I do crate him and leave him and he never uses the bathroom in it. Now that I said that he will really make a mess in there next time. LOL
