I put poor in quotes because I don't mean very poor like in poverty, but a person with a tight budget, like lower middle class. Anyways, on to my question. What do you all think about a family owning a dog when they know that if an emergency came up they would not be able to spend more than about 1000 to "save" the dog. I firmly believe in not getting a pet until you can easily budget for high quality food, toys/chews/entertainment, proper equipment, shots and other health related needs, even 30/month health program at the vet. But I do not expect in any way to be able to pay more than 1000 for a totally out of the blue emergency for the next 15 to 20 years of our lives. So what do ya'll think a responsible owner should do?

You don't need dog food for the dog. Just make sure the cooked food you provide for them is healthy. I believe in providing fresh meat for dogs. He usually eats what we eat minus the food that will harm dogs. I don't have chew toys or entertainment for the dog. The only thing I got for my dog is a leash, a collar and dog shampoo. His chew toys are big bones that we have left over from soups. We soup everyday and at least once a week he gets some sort of animal bone to chew on. In absense of toys and stuff we give the dog a lot of love, play with it and take it for walks all the time. He doesnt' need anymore entertainment as we got a lot of time for him. There is always someone at home so he doesn't feel lonely.
I do know dogs gets sad if they are alone. There was one time when my dog thought he was home alone so he makng sad noises. My dad heard him and he called to the dog from inside the house. After that he stopped cause he found out he wasn't alone.
He gets a shower once a week. I don't need to clip his nails because he's outside all the time. The weather is warm all the time so he sleeps in our open garage. He likes to sleep under the car.
He's free to roam around the house compound as we got fences and gates. Gates are closed before we go to bed. We don't want anyone coming to our house to disturb us and its also to keep stray dogs out. My old dog lived to be 11 yrs old which is an acceptable age for his breed. In his whole life time I think we spent roughly 500-800 dollars worth of medical bills.
Keep the money saved from buying dog food or other uncessary items for the health care.

it doesn't really matter whether your poor or rich as long as you can feed your dog at least twice a day..

That is like saying poor people shouldn't have kids. If the poor people really love their pets. They will take care of them, provide for them and find a way to pay for medical bills.
I know because my husband and I with three kids is considered poor with what he makes a month. We have two dogs and a cat to boot. My dogs are up to date on shots, eat high quailty dog food and treats. They get spoiled rotten. I even had my female dog fixed. So I don't have to worry about dealing with puppies. That wasn't cheap. As the vet charged almost 400 bucks to have it done.
So you can see. I have no problem with poor people having pets. Just as long as they provide with them. I know some people who have money and treat their pets worse than what a poor person does. many people with money have been brought up on charges for animal abuse and neglect. So in the long run. I don't think how much money someone has ,has anything to do with it. It is what someone can do to provide what the aniamls need.
