My best friend is planning to go to Thailand for her honeymoon, in May. Is that a good time to be visiting Thailand, and if yes, what will the weather be like? Will it be too hot? What is the best time of the year to be visiting Thailand? Also, I heard about the coup which happened some time ago. Is it safe to be visiting Thailand now?

Thailand is one of the more beautiful countries I've been to. As others have said, it will be hot and humid, but make sure to get out of Bangkok and head north, less people and cooler. Chang Mai is a nice place, and there are plenty of sights there too. Ayuttha is another destination to go...its the old capital.
If she is taking "foreign" currency to Thailand, take some higher denominations that are crisper/newer. Many places won't take run down bills and if its a higher denomination, they'll give you a higher exchange rate.

You'll have a blast. It will be very hot this time of year. I prefer the cool season (Decemberish) but I'm an American. Don't worry about the coup, everything is pretty much the same for tourists, you should only be concerned with the rules change if you want to live, work, set up a business, etc. Now Thailand is as safe as before, but aviod the south (Muslim insurgency).

I think that despite all that is goin on in Thailand right now, it is still very much an enchanting place to go for a honeymoon. bseides the scenice beaches and hill treks, there is also plenty of good food and shopping you can do while there.

Yes, it is a good idea to have brought it up here in mylot. But aside from the inputs that the users can provide, you can ask the people in the embassy as to when will be the best time to visit their country. These different countries hold festivities and you will surely love to be around when they are holding them at the time.

Thailand is a beautiful place at all times of the year.
It's the hot season right now so she'll have to expect temperatures of up tp 37 deg C. It's especially hot due to the high humidity so one can expect to be sweating tonnes throughout the day. It's wise to bring lots of water when walking around to replace all the water lost through sweating. You'll need that! :)
Yup, Thailand is generally a safe place. Just take the usual precautions and all should be fine.
