how to chat in gmail?

You guys might think that this is rediculous to be asking this now when in fact gmail have already been open for a long time already. I heard from people that we can chat in gmail. I signed up for a gmail account...when i logged in already, i dont seem to figure out how the gmail chat works...i clicked on the chat tab but i don't see anything or a chatroom? would anyone be kind enough to bother giving me infos about how to chat in gmail...i would really appreciate it.

In order to be able to chat over gmail, the first thing you need to do is to choose "Gmail View" as "Standard with Chat". You can find this at the bottom of the page.
After you do this, you will find that in the left frame of the page, "Quick Contacts" appears. In the quick contacts you need to add the email addresses of the people whom you desire to chat with. And you also have to send an invite to the person. Please note that only those persons who have gmail ids can be chatted with.
