HEEELPPP!!! How do you stop strangling dogs?

This afternoon, for some reason, while our dogs were released from their cages, our great dane (Farah) dragged our chow-spitz (Chucky), who's only like barely 1/4 of Farah's size. Farah looked like she was trying to crush Chucky. Chucky's head almost could fit in Farah's mouth. Chucky was already hanging from Farah's mouth while running around. :( Poor Chucky. So helpless, there's nothing she could do but cry.:( I remember my boyfriend telling me that when dogs get heated up like that you could use water to separate them. I tried to do that awhile ago but Farah ran away from the water still carrying Chucky. Finally, our houseboy was able to get Chucky away from Farah when Farah dropped Chucky from her mouth. My knees got weak from that horrible sight. There's a big chance that it could happen again not only to these two dogs but with other dogs as well. So, are there any experts out there who could give advice on how you could quickly stop the ramble before the weaker dog gets killed?

Why on earth would someone want to keep a great dane in a cage. No wonder he was upset. Dogs should be apart of our families and our best friends, maybe if you treated them as such and didn't lock them up in a cage they would be nice to each other. Stick me in a cage and I would be nasty too. Maybe if you spend lots of time with them and let them both know you love them they wouldn't feel threatened by each other and would get along. How would you like to be kept in a cage?

I meant like a dog house. And most of our dogs are locked in their own doghouse but this has never happened. They would often play around with each other even with our other dogs of different breeds each time they were freed. And they weren't maltreated or anything to that effect. We love our dogs. But some people here (especially nosy neighbors) don't like dogs running around the backyard even if the dogs are not in their own backyard, while putting them all on a leash is not any better either. Although some are locked in doghouses some are on leashes. No dogs on the loose are safe here. Either they get stolen or they scare people too much.
