Freedom of religion? What about freedom FROM religion?

My question is this: if we truly enjoy the freedom to practice any faith we choose, are we not free to choose no faith? If one of this nation's founding principles is separation of church and state, why are religious rituals used to define and award civil rights?
Some will say I should have started this discusson in politics, but I actually want folks to think about this on a more personal level. How much right do you have, as an American citizen, to confirm or deny rights and benefits to other citizens based on your beliefs? This nation is quickly moving from a Christian nation to a nation led by Christians. This transition will make or break our democracy. If the average American keeps letting the extremes of either wing define policy and protocol, this "grand experiment" will certainly fail. It would seem the white Christian majority has so little faith in the freedoms guaranteed to us all. Do they fear they would be denied protection if they didn't control everything?

I think that with everything going on people are so caught up on who's right and who's wrong that they have stoped caring about eachother. Its the never ending my god is better than your god thing. No one wants to just accpet that we are all different and all have the right to believe in differnt things. Frankly I think they should have always had church and state seperated and maybe we wouldn't be having this problem now. This country was founded on freedom from opression and the right to worship and believe what we want. Yet it seems the moment anyone deviates from the "norm" folks start having a damn fit.

Exactly so, devilsangel, people don't care about each other the way we should. I think we should be glad when others find a path to a moral way of being, even if it isn't the path we're on. All this "my way is the only way" stuff makes life harder than it has to be!

A nation led by Christians ? I don't think so. If you think about Bush he's as Christian as Hitler used to be: a fake one :)
