What prompted you to have them tested?
I've been doing a little research on the topic and the most helful information that I've found so far, has been from discussions on mylot. I can't read them all right now because I'm about to go out, but in the meantime. I'd love for someone to answer my question.
Thank you in advance.

My oldest grandson was diagnosed with ADHD at a very early age. From being a tiny infant we could not pacify him in any way. He cried constantly - his arms and legs were in perpetual motion and you could not cuddle him at all. We were all at our wits end. When he was just past 2 years old I read an article on ADD & ADHD. Up to that point I had never heard of it. That was well over 18 years ago so I can't remember just how many symptoms it gave or what they were but it said if you had a child with 1/2 of these symptoms chances were that the child had ADD or ADHD. Well guess what - my grandson showed every symptom that they listed. His Mother took him to the Dr. and that started us on the ADHD merry go round - and we are still on it. He will be 21 in October. I also used to work with a man in the medical field - he had problems in his marriage and at age 43 he was diagnosed with ADHD and Bi-Polar disorder.

Thanks for your response. I know these disorders are a challenge to deal with and there are so many opinions out there about them. Some people have legitimate concerns and some people are way off base on their opinions. I have found that many teachers are unsypathetic about the disorder and I'm sure many spouses have a hard time dealing with the symptoms of the disorder. They think that it's a simple case of laziness or indifference. I think that's why I've hesitated to have my son tested. I haven't wanted anyone to direct those opinions at him (although they do anyway).

ADD or ADHD is really tough on the parent and the child. I had 2 boys and a girl that ended up on medication. The main things to watch for are the inability to sit still, always running almost never walking, the low grades not because of brain power but because their attention is easily distracted, the frustration. That was my two boys. With them it was physical and mental.once they were tested then it was a big change in grades and behavior one of the biggest problems is the literal way they take things. Let me give you an example. Everyday I would tell them to stay in the limits that were set and have them repeat to me what the limits were. Then after about 10 days I forgot to do it and guess what I went to check on them and the were out of their limits. I rounded them up and got them home and said why? Their answer was that I hadn't said it so they thought it was ok to go further. I personally believe that it is better to have them tested and find out that they aren't then to not test them at all. It is good to have them on a medication that helps them to concentrate so that they can learn social behavior as well as subjects at school but keep a good eye on them when they are taking it so if there are problems with taking it you are aware.

Besides medication, do you have any other suggestions in dealing with children with ADD or ADHD? Do you think in some cases it could be managed without medication? I'm not saying children should never be medicated but I would rather not unless it was absolutely necessary. My child isn't hyperactive (luckily) be he has a very hard time staying focused.

I had my son tested when he was 7yo after a teacher suggested he may need glasses, the school nurse then said he may have ADHD/ADD so she wrote a referral..we had him tested that week & he was found to have ADHD & severe learning difficulties. I was then diagnosed as ADHD as well. I had lived with it for a long time & coped but was worried about how my son would. HE is now 13yo & still the same

My cousin's friend has it, they got him tested because he was too active, like really really hyper, so they went to the doctors and did a bunch of testing and then they found out.
