My neighbor was 97 when she passed about 4 years ago. I used to mow her lawn for free and plant flowers for her to find as a surprise when she looked outside.
I wanted to buy the house when she was gone and attach it to mine to make a much larger living space. But they wouldn't sell it. They said their niece was going to move in and live there.
Now 4 years later no one lives there. The house has a big hole in the front door where someone broke into it and they don't take care of the lawn and it is so high you can't mow it.
They are trying to mow it now and the lawn mower keeps stalling. LOL That is why I started this discussion.
When I get tired of it, I will use my weed eater and do the half of the yard close to me but I let the rest go.
I will also add I live in the city. No one on the street has grass over a foot tall and for the most part keep up with it.
Does anyone have sorry neighbors? Tell your story.

No, I don't have sorry neighbours. I'm very lucky with mine, they're pretty good and friendly but then I live in a village in the countryside which is quite often different.
I responded to this because I wondered if there was somebody you could approach who might find out if the family might want to sell the house now, if you were still interested in it. Maybe the council, the environmental office or even a solicitor? Naturally, you would expect the price for the house to be lower now, but if the family are not going to use it to live in, I would think you are quite within your rights to make enquiries elsewhere. It's worth a try anyway.
You'll have to get a scythe out for the longer grass. lol.
Brightest Blessings and good luck.

TYVM for your advice. I am hoping it becomes so much of a burden to them that they offer it to me.

Will you see if your room mates will come to my neighborhood and mow my neighbor's grass?

I feel sorry for your neighbour. But such type of characters cant enjoy life neither by him/herself nor they enjoy looking others enjoying.I had a landlord who never neither used to take fruit of his own tree by himself nor let other dwellers to eat . strange character.

A perfect example of greed. If someone lets their fruit fall to the ground and rot... I will pick from their tree. I am sneaky about it but why let it go to waste. All it does is create a smelly mess that attracts flies and bees.

I did have sorry neighbors. They have become friendly to us now, though. My story is this. When we first moved into the house we are living in now, there were some black people living catty-cornered from us, and the same people are still living there. We used to play with them when we were younger, but they began taking advantage of playing with us, and my parents told them they couldn't play with us anymore. Well, they started coming anyway, aggravating our dog, and the girl once said that my dad was a fake. She hasn't done that anymore. They have matured a lot since then, and are nicer to us than they used to be.

Once upon a time, sever of my classmates and i held a basketball match ourselves.Cause it's not funny enough,we decided to punish one who lose the match.Unfortunately,i lost the match. So my classmates decided to punish me in a particular way.Later, they asked me to fight a boy,my neighbour, who is 1 year younger than me.For not eating my words,i then go to the boy.I shouted to the boy"You have owed me 100 RMB,now, please return it to me!"Actully,he didn't owe me any amount. So he was confused, but i insist he oweing my the money. He then got angry. This is what i want.I find an excuse.Unquestionedly,i beat him badly. He was injuried.
Long time has passed,he hasn't forgiven me for the matter.I'm very sorry to him. There are so many times i want to apologize to him,but i give up finally. But in my heart,i swear,i'm really sorry to him.I should say sorry to him.

I have been in a lot of fights but I never apologize. I will not hit someone unless they swing at me. I can fight and will get in trouble if someone pursued the issue. But I always feel remorse the next day.
I think you should apologize if you started it.

i use to live in a subdivision and the house beside me was vacant, i couldn't figure out why...occasionally someone would come by and cut the grass but for the most part it just sat there. after two years i asked the city why no one lived there and found out that the guy who owned it was killed there dduring a robbery and his family wouldn't part with the house because they thought that is where his spirit remained - they just kept paying the taxes and such.
i was a little creeped out about that but thought well as long as it didn't affect me. i did occasionally cut the grass down when it started to reflect on my yard and picked up the garbage that flew onto the front yard.
i guess people just get attached and can't let go sometimes - your city can help you if you find the home to be getting rundown and beoming an eyesore - most have laws about "vacant" homes

Yes I also have sorry neighbors but not because they they don't take care of their house. But because they just really aren't friendly. It really got unde my husbands skin that when they moved in he introduced himself and tried to strike up a conversation with the husband he didn't say much of anything. He always looks mad also. Maybe it's because we are black who knows.

LOL. Do you live across the street from me? There are a lot of rental properties around me so the renters vary. There is a good mix of people. I couldn't say if it is mostly white or black... I never counted. LOL.
I am friendly sometimes but most of the time I am in a zone or really busy so I don't have much time for jibber jabber.
A lot of people around here don't work so they have all of the free time in the world. When I get home after working for 10 hours I've got stuff to do to get ready for tomorrow.
I can say that the black folks have more respect for me than the white college kids. I have had to tell the kids that they are not the only people who live here and they need to have some respect if they are going to last in this neighborhood.

I live surrounded on 3 sides by my husbands brothers and sister not including a bunch of them up the holler some. And hillside is behind us. So I am not going to say I have bad neighbors, that would be like poking at a festering sore. We do have our disagreements from time to time. My brother in law mowes his yard all the time but my husband waites till its atleast 3-4 inches before he does and that seems to irritate my brother in law for some reason, maybe it's because he is a perfectionist through and through.I also have a another brother in law who thinks if there is a bare spot in our yard beside our house he can put a bunch of chickens their and it smells to high heaven in the summer and it being so hot and not able to even open our window because of the stench. Smells like a chicken farm..lol And we suffercate in the summer.can't even enjoy outside because of the chickens either can't grow a garden because he lets them loose and they eat everything in sight and dig in my flowers and dig holes and lays in them ruins them pisses me off but I have to keep my lips zipped mostly. My sister in law has a ton of dogs like 7 animals and the whole holler is filled with dogs about 17-18 and when one starts they all start and half the time you can get any sleep for it. And all those roosters start there "get your as$ up routine every morning at day break..Whew should I continue?... naaa since I have to live here for a long time to come I cannot tell all that really annoys me...:P)
