Orkut, Please Help!

What is the deal with Orkut? I just joined a couple days ago and having much trouble navigating, PLUS it seems that nobody "talks" to one another. I joined a group trying to find new friends and all I see is ad after ad and no responses. Am I missing something or is Orkut really that lame??
