ta-daaaannn... the scholarly researched answers are here... hehehe...hope you like them, my friend.
A "ring" is not necessarily circular in shape... rings can come in triangles or squares, or rectangles, or oblong. Mind you, my ring has become oblong as years went by :D
It's called "golf course"... because, just like a course in school, to be able to finish a game, you need to start from the first tee through the eighteenth tee.
Skyscrapers "do" reach the sky. For we are part of the "sky" too... especially when one is looking from another celestial object such as Mars or the moon. Any region above me that i cannot reach, for me, is already part of the sky.
And lastly... we call the earth "mother" because, just like a mother whose womb we used to stay while still in our developmental stage as a human being...mother earth nurtures us as we go on with our lives day by day.

Why is it called a boxing ring when it is a square? Well I have no idea on this one.
Why is it called a golf course and not a golf playground? Well, maybe because it's not a playground.
Why are they called skyscrappers when they do not reach the sky? Umm, they are in the sky. :)
Why is it called mother earth and not father earth? Hmm, because mothers over rule fathers. LOL!

I dont know for the others but for mother nature, it is called like that because mothers tend to be more loving and caring (no offense to all the fathers out there) to her offsprings and a child feels much safer if his with his mother, just like earth which tends to our needs by providing us the nature and giving us comfort as we inhabit our planet.
