Since I've just completed an assignment on this, I thought it might be useful for some of you to know, it's great general knowledge.
Simplified, this is how it goes.
1. The data packet leaves your Network Interface Card
2. It travels down your LAN cable, through your router/ICS computer, and to your modem.
3. Your modem (stands for modulator-demodulator) modulates this binary data into a wave, that can be sent along x-25 cables (phone lines).
4. The phone lines lead to a local call centre, which is wired (usually fibreoptic) to a regional call centre.
5. This regional call centre is connected to other states, and sometimes to overseas (by fibre optics).
6. Once the data reaches it's targeted regional call centre, it goes from steps four to one.
If anybody has any questions or want's me to flesh it out, I'd be glad to!

Wireless in your LAN is created by Wireless access points attatched to a router (or a part of the router).
Wirless internet itself is bounced off a satelite from bigpond, and you need a dish to recieve/transmit. Im pretty sure it goes to the regional call centre.
