Is it appropriate to wear sunglasses inside the mall?

My sister and I were out shopping in the mall. While we were walking by the 2nd floor, she suddenly asked me this: "Is it appropriate to wear sunglasses in the mall?" she exclaimed. I was surprised at her question so I asked how this "irritated-sounding" question came about. She pointed to a group of girls who were all wearing sunglasses. She felt disgusted at the sight. I told her to just calm down, told her she doesn't have to react that way because people are entitled to their own fashion statements. Whether that is inappropriate or not is none of our business. Well, what do you think and feel about it? Would like to hear your opinions. Thanks

My first reaction would be like that of your sister, but it really doesn't bother me. I would just think that the person wearing it must have his/her own reason why s/he is wearing sunglasses in places like the mall. Celebrities often do that to prevent being recognized in public. Some people must have problems with their eyesights with all those lights in the mall. Others like the ones your sister have seen might be just having fun being young and always curious to do a lot of "weird" things.

a lot of them have glass roofs that let a lot of sunlight in, and bright lighting, so yes it is. I always have my sunglasses with me, as my eyes are very very light sensitive because my pupils don't contract properly, so they let too much light in. so if it's bright, at best I can't see, at worst I end up with a terrible headache. so if it's bright, then I don't see why someone shouldn't be allowed to wear sunglasses.

Oh thank you, this is enlightening. I'm sure my sister will start to be less judgmental of people wearing sunglasses in the mall when she reads your response. :)

I don't think wearing sunglasses inside is "inappropriate" maybe just a bit silly. Of course, some people wear them because they have sensitive eyes or some other medical reason. In your case, I'm sure the girls were wearing them because they thought it was "cool." It's a pretty harmless fashion statement (so long as the glasses aren't so dark that the wearers bump into things anyway!), so I don't think it is really a problem.

Sunglasses - Sunglasses rock!
I don't think that it is INappropriate to wear sunglasses in the mall, it's just not all that practical. I would be really mad if someone said a smart comment like that to me. You told her the right thing, way to stand up for other people!

I think it is ok as long as the sunglasses the person is wearing is lightly tinted. Sometimes people with migraines do wear sunglasses even in enclosed spaces as migraines maybe triggered by light. Otherwise I find people wearing dark dark glasses inside the mall annoying.

I feel that it's perfectly ok to do so. Some people want to do so to look hip and fashionable. Also, others may find it just easier to wear them rather than put them away and risk losing them later. Still others may wear them to hide eye infections or recent eye surgeries or eye bags. In any case, people are entitled to do so after all since they aren't hurting anyone by wearing their sunglasses.

maybe that group just wanted to show some fashion to all the people at the mall. just simply wanted to get some attention. see the reaction of your sister, was to look at them she got the attention.

Well the mall in my area has a glass roof that lets in ALOT of sunlight, and sometimes its very strong in some places (just picture sitting in a car and the sun is beating through your window at you) so depends on the mall i guess.. if theres no sun roofs and just regular lighting, then its kind of rediculous.
